Mr. James Hayes of the 10th con. of
Kinloss, was instantly killed on Wednes-
day of last week. Deceased, who was
about 45 years of age, was unloading
large poles from the wagon, when one of
the poles fell upon him crushing his head.

An exchange tells of a farmer who is
abusing himself because he gave hie
daughter a pair ofj chickens two years
ago and promised to feed the increase
for four years if she would take care of
thein. He says that she has $64 in the
bank and also 200 chickens that he had
to feed all winter. He also says that at
the end of four years she will own the
farm and will be charging him rent for
living on it.

The many friends of the family will
regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Ma-
thieson, beloved wife of Mr. Geo. Math-
ieson, Lucknow, which took place at the
family residence on Wednesday of last
week, in the 64th year of her age. Mrs.
Mathieson bad been ill for several
months and in this hour the bereaved
husband and family have the earnest
sympathy of the whole section.

anent, has securest fifty head of young
cows all under four years, and two bulls
for shipment to South Africa. The cat-
tle were bought near Toronto, and are
the Ayrshire and Shorthorn breed, The
shipment is being made by the Domin-
ion Government in an effort to secure
the South African stock trade for Cana-
da. They will be placed on the Govern-
ment farms in the Orange River Colony
near Bloemfontein,

Mr. James Leeder, Palmerston, has
acquired still another addition to his
museum of antiquities -a piano that is at
least 150 years old and probably older.
The kind of wire in it, it is said, has not
been used for more than a century and
a half. It was purchased from Mr. Tor-
rance, furniture dealer of Harriston.
Mr. Leeder, as a connoisseur of antiquit-
ies, prizes his latest purobase highly on
account of its age and rarity and the
elaborate and artistic carving of the
case. Despite its long term of service it
is still useful in giving forth music.
The citizens of Fort William, Ont.,
last week carried by an overwhelming
majority the by-law to grant a bonus of
$300,000 to the Grand Trunk Pacific
Railway for the purchase of a mission
property, on which the company is to
locate its principal works, docks, eleva-
tors and offices in that town for the
Superior division.

of this district regarding the value of
silo food. Some of them discarded their

On June 16th a new law goes into
effect in Missouri prohibiting women
from wearing on their hats the plumage
of any birds except the gossipy little
English sparrow, several kinds of hawks,
the horned owl and a number of other
birds that are considered not desirable.
From these undesirables, the Missouri
ladies may pluck feathers to decorate
their headwear, but to sport the plumage
of any other bird will mean a fine or a
term in jail or both.

morning of last week, officers were re-

We regret to report another death in
West Wawanosh township, this time
that of one of its oldest residents, in the
person of Mr. Henry Dodd, whose death
occurred on Saturday, the 13th nit., at
the age of 73 years. He had been in fail -
Ing health fora year past, and his snffer-
iugs of late had been intense but were
borne with quiet resignation. Mr. Dodd
was one of the best known men in the
' Nile district, where he had lived for
many years, and his place in business
and church life, in both of which he was
prominent, will be hard to fill. The de-
ceased was born in England, and came to
Canada when a boy, the family settling
in Markham township, Ia the early
fifties he was united in marriage td Ann

The bodies of all three of the men who
were swept over the Horseshoe Falls in
a boat on the night of April 22, have
been found in the lower river. The body
of Philip Trautman was found last
Thursday, while that of Thomas Knapp
was taken from the river Wednesday
evening, and that of John Knapp, his
brother, on Tuesday. The finding of the
bodies clears up the mystery which sur-
rounded their disappearance. They are
supposed to have been caught in an ice
floe while fishing and carried over the
falls. The three men 'vera residents of
La Salle.
Cuban Diarrhoea.
U. S. soldiers who served in Cuba dur-
ing the Spahish war know what this dis-
ease is, and that ordinary remedies have
little more effect than so much water.
Cuban diarrhoea is almost as severe and
dangerous as a mild attack of cholera.

sion being nearly a mile in length. Rev,
John Kennedy, pastor of Nile Methodist
church, was the officiating clergyman,
and the burial service of the Canadian
Order of Foresters, of which deceased
was a member, was conducted at the
grave, there being a large representation
of the order present_
Gardeners should never injure the
humble toad; they have no helper that
will devour so many insects. One writer
says: "The toad is an exceedingly
greedy animal and must be a source of

been found 77 of the peat called the

army worms. Thirty large caterpillars
' have three buns fed to a toad in less than
Hubby -"You spend half of your time
before the glass." Wife -"But I don't
say, 'Here's looking at you; have an-
