that hotel -keepers should be better
paid for eetvices oendered the public.
it says;
"Apart from the accomodatian required by lave, the hotel -keeper pro-
vides sheds, water, a hostler and other
:conveniences which we think are often'
taken advantage of without proper re-'
znuneration. How often do we see
persons taking advantage of the ebed
room of the hotel, the water Provided
for his horse and even tanheat for his
own conifort without leaving one cent
for renermeretion. All these titangs
cast the hotel -keeper money. They are
provided for the convenience of the
public, then wby should they not be
paid for? The expense to the indiv-
idual would not be heavy, but in the
aggregate it would mean considerable
to the hoteltnan, and woald tn a very
large extent do away with the necessity
of his dependi8gso muok On the made

easily pay for the accomaciation they
recieve without patronizing .tife bar,

Hotel -keepers wouldbe justified ita
raising their prices, particithirly for
meals. A decent meal cannot he .givea

Goderieh Harbor Works
---
Early in the spring we heard musb
of a new breakwater which the Gov-
ernment was going to build at Godes.-
ich and hereafter boats ofall sizes
would he able, to. enter that harbor.
Already, it is said about ninety thous-
and dollars have been spent on the
work and all that is yet To be seen is a
few loos standingerect, making a good
place for the small tugs that pull up to
the Goderich wharf to tun against.
Mr. -Battle, the contractor, will never
find the same graft in this government
contract AS did Dan McGillicuddy in
his dredging cent ract,a Mitchell Advo-
cate
As the contract price for the Goder-
. . .
rica breakwater was only $57,000, and
the work is only about half 'clone, they
could scarcely have spent $90,000 6n it
already... So far as there being any
'graft" in Dan McGillicuddy's contract
our cotem is m,uch mistaken. The de-
partment held him so closely to the
letter of the contract that he actually
did not make a dollar on ,it. it was
not a dredging contract. as so -often
stated. It was the building of a timber
breakwater, and a month after the
contract had been awarded him, by
open tender, the Ottawa fire caused
lumber to more than double in price.
Dan only had the benefit of his. expera
en ce as the result of being a govern-
ment contractor.
The Merchant : Ontario farmers
have enjoyed half -a -dozen prosperous

It is expected that this year's financial
returns will place Ontario farmers in
the ranks of optimists, and if they Can
avoid falling into the hands of over-
ambitious speculators, may be able to
enjoy a long period of prosperity.
