The Huron Expositor, 1986-12-24, Page 17Fall Rally held at Avonton The Fall Rally of Stratford -Huron Presby terial of the Women's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church in Canada was held at the Avonton Pres1— .clan Church with the Afternoon and :.vening Auxiliaries as host- esses lilts. Gordon Alexander, second vice president, conducted the meeting, the theme of which was "Signs of our Commitment." Hymn sings, conducted by Mrs. Bruce Aitcheson, with Joanne Innes as pianist, featured hymns composed by Fanny Crosby. The devotions "Christian Stewardship is... ' were conducted by Mrs. Jim Evans and Mrs. H. McNeill, of Motherwell-Avonbank W.M.S. Mrs. W m. Smith, president of Avonton Afternoon W.M.S., The Rev. Dr. David Thompson on behalf of the Presbytery, The Rev. H. McNeill, the Minister of Avonton Church and Mrs. K.J. McTavish, •Presbyter- ial president extended words of welcome and greetings to the 100 delegates. During tate business session it was announced that the Presbyterial executive meeting will be held on January 27, 1987 in Knox Church, Mitchell and the annual meeting will be March 24 in Knox Church, Stratford. Listowel Presbyterian Church will be the host church for the Hamilton -London Synodical; April 20-22, 1987. Mrs. Alexander reported on the Council '86 meeting that she attended in Tomnlo. Annual Christmas Ladles' Night well attended The annual Christmas Ladies' Night sponsored by the Father Stephen Eckert Council, Knights of Columbus, of Seaforth and District was well attended on Thursday, December 18, in the Council moms at St. Columban. The general meeting took place early, Part of the business dealt with were four motions in regard to donations: $100 donation to St. James Parent-Teacher Committee re: play- ground equipment; $50 conation to Town and Country Homemakers; a Christmas donation to Fr. Caruana, our worthy Chaplain; and to Miss Margaret Ryan our representative in the Queen of the Seaforth Fair Contest and, was Miss Congeniality. Miss Ryan gave her address and was presented with a cheque by the Grand Knight, Richard McKay. Following the meeting a social was held with a musical group from the Staffa area. Santa Claus was present and distributed gifts to the ladies, The Dean Egan Assembly, 4th degree members held their annual draw. Winners r Brad Ruston, Dublin; Riek Groothuis, Egmondville; Herb Brown, Dub- lin: Judy Biesinger, listowel; Cecilia Ryan, RR 2, Dublin; Steve Argyle, Bayfield; Brad Buchanan, Hensel!, A smorgasbord lunch was catered by Mr. and Mrs Ron Ryan of the Hard Up Roost at St. Columban. 'rhe Stewardship Committee of Mrs. R.J. McTavish, Mrs. Clarence Patterson and Mrs. Florence Fawcett prepared and conducted a Bible Study 'Our Commitment' - talents, time, money, etc. Group officers led workshops for treasurers, historians, supply, literature and friendship and service secre- taries. Mrs. McNeill sang "Fill my cup, ford." The guest speakers, The Rev. Clarence and Mrs. •McMullen, were introduced by Mrs. Robert Dunseith, of Harrington. The McMui- lens are Presbyterian Missionaries at the Baring Union Christian Institute of Sikh Studies at Batala, Punjab, India, a school of 1,500 students - Sikhs, Hindus and Chris- tians. He traced the introduction of Christian- ity to India by St. Thomas in the third century to the present day, stressing that the native people are assuming more responsibility for the spread and work of the Christian Church. A question and -answer period followed. The guest speakers were thanked by the first vice-president, Eleanor Stevenson. The offering was received by Mrs. D. Taylor and Mrs, M. Hoggarth, of Hensall W .M.S. and dedicated by Mrs. B. McAllister of Knox Afternoon W.M.S. Goderich. The courtesy remarks were extended by Mrs. Cathleen Jack of Knox W .M.S. Stratford and the benediction was pronounced by Mrs. M c'l'avish.
