Seaforth Novice
keen in match up
Monkton came to Seaforth to play hockey
against the Novice on Saturday. The guys,
very talkative before the game, seemed awful
keen.
The first period, however, was. not very
profitable for either team. The second period
again remained scoreless for both teams
until only five minutes remained. At that time
Monkton's Martin Vanle Hoven started the
scoring and Monkton was ahead 1-0 after tun
full periods. It wasn't because Seaforth
wasn't trying. They never had so many
chances but those guys just couldn't buy one.
Seaforth's Steve Mcbtally, assisted by
Shawn Anstett, scored their first goal 212
minutes into the Third.
Martin Vanle Hoven came back with two*
more goals for Monkton. Seal'orth didn't give
up though, but only managed to get one more
goal by Steve McInally assisted by Charles
Robertson. The game ended 3-2 for Monkton.
Seaforth travels to Brussels to play
Monkton on Tuesday night to see if they can
get a win hack.

PROVEN ABILITY — Denise Morey, of Seaforth, has proven herself on the college
basketball court. Miss Morey, who plays point guard for the St. Lawrence College Vikings,
Kingston, finished 'fourth In the scoring race, and was voted MVP In a recent playoff
tournament. (Photos submitted)
Morey among leaders
A leading point scorer during her years of
high school basketball. Seaforth's Denise
Morey has adapted well to her first year
playing college ball. In fact she's more than
adapted.
Miss Morey, who is studying Behavioral
Science Technology at Kingston's St. Law-
rence College, finished fourth in the point
standings of Tier Ii College Basketball with a
.16.5 points per game average. Ahead of her
were two of her own team members and a
Georgian College player.
In the league playoff tournament held in
Kingston on the final weekend of November
Miss Morey not only led her team to victory
with a 21 point performance in a blow-out
game against North Bay's Canador College
and a 27 point performance in a 90-61 win
over Durham College, but was voted Most
Valuable Player of the tournament as well.
"She's an excellent guard. She scores
double figures in points....she runs all our
plays offensively. and defensively she can
play with anybody," said Miss Morey's
coach, Diana Drury.
"She's small. but she's very aggressive.
She's got moves and she's got game sense.
She looks for the opening. She looks for the
give -and -go and she'll go to the basket as
opposed to most guards who like to stay back.
She'll go and then shell gel back into her
position to set up the plays again. She's
smart "
Ms Drury said i1 was Miss Morey's
Seaforth Midgets part of Silver.
quickness and court sense that compelled her
to make her a guard, despite the fact that
Miss Morey's best high school ball was
played as a forward.
"1 couldn't believe it," said Ms. Drury,
"because of the size of her, so 1 purposely
made her a guard. I had to work with her
defensively because she's not used to
guarding strong guards."
"I tried to teach her reverses, because she
likes to dribble with one hand, so she's
starting to beat other guards and she can go
one-on-one no problem. Defensively she can
pick a hall off and steal really well."
Miss Morey impressed her coach with her
willingness to adapt.
"She's always willing to learn more, which
is, 1 think. a bit of a struggle because once
people reach university level or college level,
it's like they know everything," said Ms.
Drury
•'She's been really good. She's learned a
lot of things this year. She's had to run the
plays. Initially, she didn't want to have to be
the boss of the offence, but I gave her that and
I said. 'it's your job to set things up' and she's
taken it over well. She's confident in it now. i
thought from the first couple of practices she
could handle the job and that's why I gave it
to her •
In addition to playing college basketball
Miss Morey also enjoys the sport on an
industrial level. She also plays hockey and
volleyball
