Decor should stay
"Be more decorative, yet stay functional
when considering your decorating," advises
published interior design author Mary
Walker.
Mrs. Walker visited G.G. Goettler of
Dublin Thursday and spoke to more than 40
Staffa area women. 'lite women were hosted
by the Staffa Women's Institute. Mrs. Art
Smale of the WI arranged the event.
Mrs, Walker, who published a textbook on
interior design entitled "Homespun," out-
lined some of the unchanging home decorat-
ing rules for the ladies' homes. For instance,
a monochromatic color scheme makes a room
appear bigger, brighter, and more airy. A
monochromatic color scheme uses different
shades and tints of the same color.
"It is functional since changes in decor can
be made with little effort," Mrs. W alker said.
Using analogous color scheming is also
making good use of color choices, the former
school teacher said. Analogous colors are
those which fall beside each other on the color
wheel.
Finally, complementary colors can be
mixed. To discover which colors are comple-
mentary, Mrs. W alker recommended.a color
wheel be purchased. The wheel will simplify
the possible combinations for the decorator.
They can be purchased at paint stores.
When considering furniture purchases
Mrs. Walker suggested that women thor-
oughly consider the multi -uses of each piece.
For instance, an armoire could contain a
television and also provide storage space for
out -of -season linens and clothing.
"The function of an armoire evolves over
time. This adds to the value which one piece
of furniture. ---Multi usage," the London
decorator said. Nesting tables were also
pointed out as an example of multi -functional
furniture by Mrs. Walker.
Planning for one's future, decorating will
increase chances of developing the multi-
functional approach to decorating. Mrs.
W alker suggested the women keep a file of

History was made at the October.meeting
of the Marian Ritchie Evening Auxiliary
when the members voted to amalgamate with
the Cromarty Women's Missionary Society,
the joint organization to be known as the
Marian Ritchie WMS.
The Auxiliary was first a Mission band
formed in 1913, then became known as the
Marian Ritchie Auxiliary in 1926 in honor of
the minsiter's wife, Mrs. Ritchie. The
W .M.S. dates back to July, 1903. In the last
few years the membership in both groups has
decreased to the point that it seemed wise to
join the two.
Meetings will be held on the third Tuesday
of the month in the afternoon from January to
April, and in the evening from May till
November. The December meeting will
continue to be a pint Christmas meeting with
