the total number of families in Canada would
be living below the poverty line if women
were not earning an income. Almost half of all
women with children under three years of
age, and over half, with children between the
ages of three and five participate in the labor
force. For the estimated 955,753. children
under the age of six, whose mothers were in
the labor force in 1983, there was only one
space for every seven children in a licenced
approved child care. Almost the only
maternity benefits available to Canadian
women in the labor force are through the
Unemployment Insurance which only pays 60
per cent of a woman's salary for 15 weeks,
and for many, this is a period of serious
financial hardship. Debbie Selkirk, a Goder-

COMING EVENTS
" 1t is imperative that any generators which
have not yet registered with us should submit
their reports immediately,"said Environ-
ment Minister, Jim Bradley.
Ontario Regulation 309 requires that all
generators of hazardous and liquid industrial
wastes register with the Ministry by
September 17, 1986. The regulation came
into force a year ago and is designed to ensure
cradle -to -grave management for wastes that
are of special concern.
To date, approximately 7,500 generators
have submitted registration reports. Those
who sent in complete reports by the
September 17 deadline are in compliance
with the regulation, and may continue to ship
wastes. Although it will take several months
to make a complete technical evaluation of
each of these reports, temporary registration
numbers are being issued so as not to impede
the legitimate transportation of hazardous
and liquid industrial wastes.
Generators which did not submit reports by
the due date will not be able to transport their
wastes until they submit a completed report
form and receive a formal registration
number, in writing, from the ministry. Late
registrants shipping wastes without a num-
ber will not be in compliance with Regulation
309, and will be subject to penalties under the
Environmental Protection Act.
