HOW DO I BREAK THE NEWS
OF DEATH?
Most people hate to be the bearers of
sad tidings - especially the tidings of
death, actual or impending. But the
"bad -news -bringer" can actually do
great good by making sure that the
receiver of the news will have the
support he or she needs to bear and
express the feelings of shock, loss, and
sadness.
Even for persons who are not very
enfotionally expressive, it is important
for them to feel that they are with
people who will be supportive when
they receive such news.
Such support comes in the form of total
listening and acceptance. This means
appreciating the full human beauty of
the bereaved person even as his face is
contorted with distress and tears. It
does not mean truing to "calm" or
"reassure" him or otherwise turn off
his expressions of feeling.
An attitude of attentive listening,
physical touching or embrace are more
important than your exact choice of
words. Indeed, if you are in touch with
your own feelings, you will find the
right words. A simple "I'm sorry"
backed by genuine feeling will be more
supportive than lengthy praise of the
deceased.
And remember - you can go on giving
support well past the funeral mourning
period. That may be when you're
needed the most,
