Walton Pee -Wee Boys advanced in W OAA
Softball playoffs when they eliminated
W ingham in two straight games.
In the first game played at WIngham on
August 12, Walton edged Wingham 3-2 in a
fine pitchers duel. Tim Nolan ended the game
by striking out the last batter with the tying
run on third base.
The second game of the best two out of
three series was played at Walton on August
17. Wingham opened the game with a
two -run home -run by D. Heinmiller in the top
of the first inning but Walton tied it with two
runs of their own in bottom of the fast.
W Ingham led 4-3 after four and 5-4 after six
innings.
In the top of the seventh inning, Wingham
picked up one run to lead 6-4 going into the
bottom of the seventh inning.
The first batter for Walton was Tim Nolan,
who walked on four pitches. Manny Taylor
then hit a long triple over first base to score
the run. Wingham then changed pitchers
before the next W alton batter, Ron Stevenson
hit another long triple over first base to tie the
score.
The next batter was Brian Love, who hit a
single over third base to score the winning
run and give Walton a 7-6 victory and a 2-0
win in the series.
Walton will now have a bye until Winthrop,
Mitchell, St. Marys and Milverton determine
a winner to play against Walton.
TRI -COUNTY
In the'hi-County league, Walton ended in
first place and received a bye in the first
round of the playoffs. The top five teams were
Walton - 33 points, Brussels - 32 points,
Gowanstown - 31 points, Belmore - 28 points,
and Winthrop - 19 points,
The two winners of Winthrop vs. Gowans -
town and Belmore vs. Brussels will play
W alton in a round-robin series with home and
home games. The two top teams then play a
two out of three series for the Championship.
Walton Pee Wee Boys are Steve Fritz, Paul
McLiwain, Tim Nolan,Manny Taylor, Ron
Stevenson, Brian Love, Pat Nigh, Brad
Taylor, Brent Evans, Jim Shortreed, Brian
Williamson and Michael Miller.
'Coaches are George Love, Bruce Clark and
Don Nolan.
TOURNAMENT RALNED OUT
The 12th Annual Walton Squirts Tourna-
ment was held this past weekend. Only 4
games were played before it was rained out
and had to be postponed. The results of the
games so far are: Winthrop 4 - Belgrave 5;
Belmore 5 - Brussels 1; Walton 9
Londesboro 0; and Mitchell 18 - Clinton 2.
The tournament for the remaining games are
rescheduled for September 5 and 6.
Tickets on the Grocery Draw will still be
available until September 6 when the draw
will be held.
BAKE AND GARAGE SALE
The Walton Area Sports Club are busy
planning some fundraising events. The first
one to take place will be a Garage and Bake
Sale, Saturday, August 30 from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. and Sunday, August 31 from 12-4 p.m.
Donations in baking or anything for the
garage sale will be most welcome from
anyone in the community.
Please bring your items to the park
between 8:30 a.m 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

Melady attended the Melady reunion at the
home of Tom and Teresa Melady, Goderich.
Those attending were from Dublin, St.
Columban, Kitchener, Toronto, London,
Goderich and Mitchell.

St. Columban held a Mosquito soccer.
tournament this past Saturday. Despite the
wind and rain all eight teams showed up.
Teams from Goderich, Grand Bend,
Seaforth. Lucan, Bryanston, St. Columban
and two teams from Exeter played on a newly
landscaped St. Columban soccer field.

On Friday evening the family of Francis
and Marie Hicknell honored their parents
with a dinner at Grebs Restaurant in
Waterloo on the occasion of their 30th
wedding anniversary. Those attending were
Joe Hicknell of Goderich, Teresa and Martin
Van Raay of Dashwood, John Hicknell of St.
Marys, Marg Bicknell and friend of Water-
loo, Stephen, RR 5, Seaforth, Joe Manley of
Stratford and Matilda Hicknell of Kitchener.
Unable to attend were Larry and Fran
Hicknell of Nipigon.

30th ANNIVERSARY
Institute Branches; from Huron -East Dis-
trict joined with the Walton Women's
Institute members to help celebrate their
30th Anniversary in the hall, Wednesday
evening August 20, 1986.
President, Helen Craig welcomed the large
crowd to the special evening of the Walton
Institute. Marjorie Humphries was pianist.
Helen read a poem, "The last few years
changes of the W .I. hall.
Secretary, Margaret Shortreed read min-
utes of the first Institute meeting in 1956,
held at the home of Mrs. Wilbur Turnbull.
In 1957 there was a membership of 57. The
former roll call brought 17 ,members to the
front when corsages were pinned on and
several pictures taken, present members
were later given corsages.
In the correspondence several cards of
Congratulations and Best W ishes were read
from several of the Institutes and former
members.
This being the meeting on Resolutions the
Itoll Call, "A Homemakers beef which might
be improved by a resolution or an appropriate
action" brought in a variation of answers
from members and friends of other branches.
Leona Armstrong, the guest speaker, was
introduced by Betty McCall. Leona told of her
responsibility of her new job as Huron County
Warden along with her township affairs and
other activities she attends through the year.
Marion Godkin thanked Leona . for her
interesting message and presented her with a
gift.
The visiting branches contributed a num-
ber for the program sharing in the 30th
niversary

August 16. We' welcome Theresa to the

Mike Nevers of Sarnia is holidaying with
Larry and Marsha Nevers at RR 4, Walton.
Gordon Byers of Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Jrajaefski of Milverton and Mr. and
Mrs. Lorne Dale of RR 4, Clinton, visited
Sunday at the home of Helen Byers, Seaforth.
The "B" trophy went to the squad team
from Lucan and the "A" trophy went to the
Exeter No. 1 team.
Many spectators came to see the tourna-
ment and the organizers hope this interest
shown will keep growing in the years to come.

few hours at Story Book Gardens in London.

of Southampton spent a couple days last week
with her parents.

WOAA softball, playoffs
Anniversary of the Walton Institute. Ethel
branch presented a guessing contest followed
by Gorrie conducting a nursery rhyme
contest. Moncrief had a sing -song while a
Lakelet member sang azbolo. Cranbrook had
an interesting purse contest followed by
Brussels Majestic presenting a comical skit
on Naughty Mother Goose. , Fordwich mem-
bers read a poem. Leona Armstrong
presented a county mug that was won by
Marie McTaggart.
The table at the front of the hall was set
with an anniversary cake beautifully decorat-
ed in the Institute colors of blue and gold by
Marion Godkin, It was adorned by blue
candles in gold holders. The cake was cut by
Mrs. Wilbur (Jen) , Turnbull, the first
secretary of the Walton W W.I. in 1958.
Following the Institute Grace everyone was
invited to the basement for refreshments of
