Anniversary observed
BYGOLRDON S:OTT, PRo
Saturday, July 26 marked the 50th
anniversary of the unveiling of Canada's
memorial on Vi ltidgc. This memorial does
mere than mark the site of the Battle of Vimy
Ridge. • stands as a tribute to all who served
the country in the battle in that four -year -
struggle of trenches and mud and more
particularly to those who paid the supreme
sacrifice.
Among the more than 66,000 dead were
manywho have no known grave. Inscribed on
the ramparts of the Vimy Memorial are the
names of 11,184 Canadian soldiers posted as
missing and presumed dead in France. The
land on which the Vimy Memorial stands was
dedicated in perpetuity to Canada by the
grateful people of France and will remain a
Memorial to all those Canadians who fought
and lost their lives in the Great War. This was
a message from the Department of Veterans'
Affairs and signed by the Minister The Hon.
George Hees.

both Goderich teams tied for the "A"
championship. They decided to both go home
winners and did not play off for the title. The
"B" championship went to the entry from
Blyth. The Ladies Auxiliary served lunches
and hot beef through the day. In the evening
"lively Lou" provided music for a dance. To
those who helped in any way the Legion says
thanks for a very successful day.
The Branch was saddened to hear of the
passing of one of the older veterans of the
Second War, Capt. "Bob" Spittal. A
memorial service was held by the Legion last
Thursday evening officiated by Padre Com-
rade Frank Golding. To Bob's wife Inez and
his family the sincerest sympathies in the loss
of a husband and father are offered.
They grow not old as'we that are left grow
old. Age shall not weary thein nor the years
condemn. At the going down of the sun and in
the morning we will remember them.
"Continuing our commitment to the
development of new Canadian plays, the
Blyth Festival is workshopping three new
scripts," said Artistic Director Katherine
Kaszas.
The first workshop, The Girls in the Gang
by Ray Storey of Edmonton, with music and
lyrics by John Roby, began on July 28. It is
about the lives of the girlfriends and wives of
the infamous Boyd Gang, a high -living,
bank -robbing gang in Toronto in the 1950s.
This is not the first time Storey and Roby have
worked together; they previously collabor-
ated on "Country Chorale" which was
workshopped at the Blyth Festival in 1981
and later produced in Alberta and British
Columbia. Frequent visitors to the Festival
'will remember with pleasure John Roby's
music in "Country Hearts", performed here
in 1982 and 1985. The Girls in the Gang was
directed by Jackie Maxwell who co-ordinated
"Beaux Gestes and Beautiful Deeds" in
Blyth in 1985.
Gerald Lenton (who appeared in the 1984
season productions "A Spider in the House"
and "Blue City") is the author of the second
workshop, The Third Last Christmas, which
started on August 4. This is a black comedy
about a young man and his wife who are
returning to the, family home for his father's
"last Christmas." The father is dying - but
has been doing so for a number of years, and
this is the third such "last Christmas" . David
Craig, who adapted "Cue for Treason" for
the children's workshops in Blyth in 1984,
will direct Christmas.
