• Charles Brpce Stewart, the former presi-
dent ar Sim sops Limited, died late Saturday

His career, which took him to the top of the
Canadian retail field had its beginning in the
Seaforth store of Stewart Brothers - an
association he began on graduation from
Seaforth Collegiate Institute.
He started with the Robert Simpson
Company in Montreal at 25 and within a year
of being hired had made his mark by boosting
sales in the new sports department over the
1$1 million mark•
After a period as general manager of the
SimMr, Stewart
became ne thestoresons company's Halifax, European an general
manager in 1954, living in London, England.
He returned to Canada to take up the position
of general manager in Toronto during the
60s and was appointed vice-president in 1968
and president a year later.
During Mr. Stewart's six years at the sons
of the company, from 1970 to 1976, Siunp
posted a strong record of growth and enjoyed
a period of expansion in suburban retail
markets. He continued to work for the
company unti11978, in the final two years as
claputfter h s retirementn of , Mr. .SStewart remain-

Aactive in community affairs, serving as'
director of W efesley Hospital and of the
Toronto School of Theology.
Prominent in business circles, Mr. Stewart
also served as a director for several
companies, including Simpsons -Sears, All-
state insurance and Canada Permanent.

sons and a daughter. Mrs. Stewart died in
1972.
Mr. Stewart leaves his second wife,

He is also survived by his sons, David

wife Penny of Chicago and Ban
of
Frankfurt, Germany andMacnee Heather
and her husband Rupert tighther
Angeles, California; grandchildren Karen
and Ian Stewart, and stepsons, fan, Alastair
and Keiller Mackay.
Also surviving are brothers Janes A. and
David Stewart of Seaforth; Rev, Douglas of
Kincardine and, Rolland of Oshawa and
sisters Mary (Mrs. C. Cox) and Kathleen
(Mrs. William Bruce) of Kincardine and
Nora (Mrs. Norman McIntyre) of Owen
Sound.
He was predeceased by a brother Gerald.
