Legion honors members

There is a report of the District Track and
Field meet held in Kitchener on Saturday,
June 21, Eleven athletes competed in the
meet marking the first time in several years
the local Legion has competed.
Jason Patterson and Karston Carroll
placed second and third respectively in the
Bantam boys triple jump. Sherry Harburn
placed fifth in the Bantam giris shot-put.
Jason McNichol placed second m the Bantam
boys high jump with Bev Anderson finishutg
third. lisa Henderson placed third in the
Bantam girls high jump and fifth in the long
jump. Other • competitors who represented
the local Legion at the meet were Leanne
Dolmage, Les Hudie, Tracy Fortune and )!uric
Johnston. The athletes had a very good day
and would like to thank our Branch . for
sponsoring them at our District meet.
At the Honors and Awards banquet held
Saturday evening at the Legion Hall,
Certificates of Merit were presented to five of
the Ladies Auxiliary members. Those receiv-
ing these awards were Olive Betties, Olave
little, Ina Mcgrath, Geraldine Fraiser and
Barbara Scott. Three members of the
Auxiliary, Peggy Coombs, Helen Nicholson
and Eva Brown received 30 year pins. Dilys
Finnigan a 25 -year pin and Marilyn Hedged
and Ida Earle received 10 year pins. These
awards were all presented by Mary Hahn,
Zone Commander Cl and Ann Wood,
Auxiliary President. Past President, Thelma
Coombs received her Past President's pin
from Peg Coombs, Chairman of the Honors
and Awards committee. Ann Agar received a
work ssshe of
all ivolunteer
okhe has done fortheAuxiliary in
the
past years. President, Jim Watson presented
President Ann Wood with a desk set as a
memento from the Dominion Convention in
Edmonton.
Two of the First War Veterans, Comrade
Paul Doig and Comrade Ned Boswell
received long service pins of 50 and 55 years
respectively. Both replied to the awards in a

ovation. Other long service pins were
awarded to many of the members as well. A
Certificate of Merit was awarded to Henry
Ziler for his outstanding service to Comrades
who have been sick in various hospitals or at
home. One life Membership was awarded for
oustanding service through the years to
Comrade Dick Whitely now residing in
Kitchener. The Honors and Awards Chair-
man for Ontario Command Howard Ellis read
the citation and presented Comrade Whitely
with his 'Life Membership. Other guests
participating were Walter Dukes, District C
Commander and Jack Tufford, Zone Cl
Commander. Both were accompanied by
their wives, June Dukes and Hita Tufford.
Congratulations to all who received awards.
Don't forget the Branch Golf Tournament
coming up on July 12. A list has been
provided to sign your name on the bulletin
board.
At the going down of the sun and in the
morning we will remember them.
