I - :" . , . _ . f _ SPORTSFEST will be celebrating its 10th year in Port Elgin on August 15, 16 and 17. For those not familiar with Sportsfest, it's a weekend festival of sports and recreational activities, designed primarily for recreational and house league level participants. The idea of "winning at all costs" is put on the back burner, •with participation and fun for all becoming the main objectives. Sportsfest came into being in 1976 as a series of events held in different locations in the L.H.Z.R.A. area, which includes the counties of Bruce, Grey, Huron, Perth and W ellington. The area stretches from Tober mory in the north, to St. Marys in the south, and from Lake Huron to Arthur. The town of Kincardine was chosen as the site of the first combined 1,300S0 participants approxi- matelyfest in 7, with involved15 events. The torch was passed to Port Elgin for the 1978 Sportsfest and since then it has been held in Listowel, Goderich, Owen Sound, Hanover, Seaforth, Kincardine (again) and Exeter: Sportsfest '84 in Kincardine was the biggest event with some 3,500 participants. Organizers for this year's event hope to top the 4,000 mark in participation. Since it is the 10th anniversary of the event, the organizers of Sportsfest '86 are planning to make it the biggest and best yet. Plans currently call for a list of 39 events including ladies softball, and slow -pitch, men's slow- kitch, youth soccer, mens and junior boys great recreational facilities. basketball, curling, darts, chess, euchre, Over the aeons Seaforth has been the home f ridge, oftbal , chid long -all, distanceb swim, of fine hockey players, figure skaters, and a minor softball, children's T -ball, bowling, famous marching band.
