Horticultural society spends evening at Women Park
The Seaforth Horticultural Society spent an
evening recently at Sloman Park in Clinton. It
was their June meeting.
The meeting was conducted in the old
school car which served as a home and school
room for Mr. and Mrs, Sloman and their five
children for 39 years while they were in
Northern Ontario.
Mrs. Sloman and her daughter Margaret
welcomed everyone and Margaret showed
slides taken during those years. A former '
pupil noticed the ad advertising the school car
for sale in Toronto and brought it to the
Siemens attention. The car was in very bad
condition with the roof gone and a tree
growing out of the side of it. It was later
brought to Clinton, restored and placed on!
some lana owned by the 'Town in the
south-east corner of Clinton.
The park has several flowerbeds and
Margaret, pointed out she had purchased
several perennials through the years at the
Seaforth plant sales.
At the business part of the meeting
President, Steve Hildebrand presided. The
society's representative for the Fair Queen
contest will be Linda Ellis. Everyone was
reminded of the flower show August 13 at the
Legion Hall and to enter their flowers to make
the show a success. The bus trip to Cullen
Gardens is Sunday, September 21.
The civic improvement committee have
been busy and hatPe the 10 hanging baskets
the society purchased planted and hung on
main street, The planters are also planted
and the beds at the town hall, The Dublin and
Brucefield beds are also looked after by
members of the Seaforth Society.
The next meeting will be held September
10 at the Public School. It will be a dessert
meeting with other area clubs invited.
The theme of the meeting will be "Good
Things Grow in Huron County." Don Pullen
will be guest speaker and Gordon W right will
show slides. Instead of a plant sale there will
be a preserve sale, so when you are doing
pickles and jam make an extra one for the
sale.
