Golf course now has something to cheer about
ON THE GREENS
by Carolanne Doig
Summer has certainly started with very
typical weather...thunderstorrns, hot sultry
nights and high humidity. After waiting all
winter to get out golfing it's a shame when
it's "too hot to nlav eolf.” Hopefully
everyone remembers the dos and don'ts for
the golf course during a thunderstorm. It's a
very dangerous place to be.
Summerha5 come upon us so fast and with
it the Canadian Open. Last week we reviewed
the best way to view the Open and this week
we have even more reason to go. Ian has
made the field for the 1986 Canadian Open.
After a rather poor showing at the Labatt
event in Stouffville last week, and a 14th
place finish at the Quebec Open on the
weekend, Ian gained an exemption into
Canada's premier golfing event.
Ian will be in the field on Thursday and
Friday for sure, and if he makes the cut on
Bowlers fare well
The ladies of the Seaforth Bowling Club
held a pairs tournament on Wednesday.
The winners were Betty Tilley and Olive
Papple, Seaforth; Mary Edy and partner,
Woodstock; Grace Elliott and partner, Luck -
now; Mary Finlayson and Grace Broadfoot,
Seaforth.
On Saturday, June 21 the Sills Trophy
Tournament was played with 13 greens. This
is for mixed pairs. Finishing first were Jack
MacDonald and Audrey MacDonald of
Ludmow; second, Fred Tilley and Betty
Tilley, Seaforth; third. Al Gledhill and
partner, Seaforth; fourth. Jack Treleaven and
Jane Treleaven, Ludorow; fifth, Bert Gray
and Jean Gray. Clinton; sixth, Art Finlayson
and Mary Finlayson, Seaforth; seventh,
Harrold Rushton and partner, London; eighth,
Bill Brown and Carol Carter, Seaforth; ninth,
Oliver Pryce and Olive Pimple, Seaforth;
tenth, Don Haynes and Lois Haines, Clinton.
Some outside tournament winners were:
Exeter: first, Fred Tilley and Nell Bell and
third, Mel Brady and Sandy Pepper. London -
third, Tom L'hi.11ips and Lee Ryan. Exeter
Legion Tournament - third, Me Brady and
Art Finlayson.
Friday he can play Saturday and Sunday.
Ian's father Ken played in the Canadian Open
when it was held at Westmount in Kitchener
and Ian's exemption into this tournament has
the family and friends in a flap. For years
Seaforthians have attended the Canadian
Open in droves. Now we will really have
something to cheer about. We wish Ian all the
best and hope he hits them long, straight and
not too often.
Last week's good turnout at men's night
gave six winners; Cam Doig, Dave Crocker,
Roostie Henderson, Casey Van Bakel, Frank
Verberne and Dave Tilley. Men are reminded
this Sunday is the first round of the Club
Championship and also to get on with Crown
Life and Club matches.
Ladies night winners were C.A. Doig, Barb
