A certain amount of posturing is, after all, necessary for successful performances on the world stage. However, neither should it be expected for the leader of a country plagued with unemployment and a massive deficit to travel, at the taxpayers' expense, in a fashion soopulent and o dtu t extravagant as p theto e incomprehensible to the average people Unfortunately Canada's current leader, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has been discovered to be doing just that. Mr. Mulroney perhaps, is doing no different than previous leaders, but fortunately thanks to the Access to Information Act, he has not been able to keep travel expense figures hidden amongst massive operational budgets as his forebearers were able to do. In any case, last week's disclosure that more than $800,000 was spent by the Prime Minister's office on only three foreign excursions, Is an embarrassment to the faith of the Canadian people. While no one could have been naive enough to believe our country's representatives were bedding down in $40 -a -night motel rooms, it was still a shock to learn the PMs four -night stay in New York's luxurious Pierre Hotel cost nearly $5,000. Still, this bill is nothing compared to $13,000 for motor vehicle rentals on the New there can benne sos und r. Mulroney found occasion to rent the space shuttle, explanation for such a high transportation tally. Worse than any of this, is a week-long trip to Paris for the first world summit of francophone countries and a brief official visit to France, which cost in excess of a half -million dollars. Many Canadians save all their lives for such a trip, then spend only one-hundredth as much money. 0,837 efy. A total of $27,630.72 was spent on "unspecified professional services." Free show, no show Everybody likes a free show, but unless the community at large pays to see this year's Canada Day fireworks display, next year there may be no show at all. The recreation department, which has for the past five years, sponsored the show, has found it may not be economically feasible In the future. Originally when the department started providing the dfaplay the coat was almost entirely covered by a grant from the government s Canada Day Celebrations Committee. Today, five years later, the Cat of purchasing the necessary pyrotechnics has gone up significantly, While the allocation of monies through the grant system has remained relatively the same, or gone down. This year it is costing $2,500 to buy enough fireworks to put ort an approximately one-hour show. Only Si +250 of that cost Will be recover through the grant.
