SPORT People The physical fitness craze has hit North America and with it has come an increased number of fitness -related injuries, "People are a lot more physical fitness aware these days and that's good, but they're goingat it too strenuously," says Drusilla Leitch, an area fitness instructor and registered fitness appraiser. "It's great to exercise but a lot of people are getting hurt because they are going at it wrong, or because they are trying to compete with everyone else." Mrs. Leitch says she herself was guilty of approaching fitness wrong. Now, she says, she has a new respect for exercise, and a new awareness of its benefits and its detriments. "I didn't realize you were dealing with a person's body when you exercised. I was just so anxious to say, hey, I can do that, I didn't give much thought to what I was doing to any body, or to anyone else's. When I think back to then, and then think about everything I know now I say to myself, hey, you could have killed somebody." Now, for that very reason, Mrs. I.eitch says Ontario is trying to come up with a sports certification program. A program which she says will ensure people who teach fitness actually know what they're doing. The Government of Canada, Fitness and Amateur Sport, has also come up with a CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP fitness conscious Standardized Test of Fitness, which people can take to find out just how fit. they are, and how much physical activity they can safely assume without harming themselves. Mrs. Leitch is qualified to give people that test. "I came from a generation that wore girdles. My mother wore a corset. I don't think there are many girls now who wear a girdle and that's because everyone, -is more fitness conscious. That's great. W e need to exercise and condition ourselves. But we've gotten into a fitness fad which we think means beautiful leotards, 20 -minute work- outs and lots of stuff over your head and arms. We've forgotten the real meaning of aerobic, which is with oxygen, and think we have to do a lot of jumping and stuff. W e want a gorgeous body and think we have to work like hell to get it," she says. Mrs. Leitch adds too many people are attempting to do exercises that are beyond their capabilities. A fitness appraisal, she says shows people what they are capable of and helps a person improve against that. "You shouldn't be competing with the person next to you. He -she might be 20 years younger and 15 pounds lighter. You should find out what it is you can do, and be proud of any improvements you make. "Exercise should never hurt. If you hurt, that's your body's way of telling you you've done something wrong. And you should listen to your body." Mrs. Leitch herself got into fitness first as a pupil at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. Her transformation to teacher came about quite accidently, and now she says she is addicted to the idea of fitness. Because of that she adds she is also addicted to increasing her knowledge about physical fitness. "I taught, but once I started I realized just how much I didn't know. People would ask The R.V. A step test, where the participant marches up two steps in time to the music makes up the cardio -respiratory fitness part of the test, The results are recorded and ranked in comparison with other people the same age and sex in Canada. "In talking to different people I've come to the realization that people do like to know if they're in shape, if they're wasting, their time or could try harder or whatever. I tell people it's not so much your weight that says you're out of shape but how much fat you have compared to lean weight. Just because a chart says at six foot, six inches, or whatever, you should weight 230 pounds, doesn't mean that's right. Muscle weighs more than fat," she says. Whatever the results of the test it helps Mrs. Leitch devise a suitable plan of attack for the participant. "Last year I realized I wanted to learn more and more about fitness. I' looked at myself and realized I've turned my fitness into my lifestyle. I don't eat nutritious food all the time, and I don't have a particularly marvelous shape, but I'm fit. Everyone can incorporate fitness into their lifestyle, it Track and Field athletes from Seaforth District High School competed with those from other area high schools in the annual Huron -Perth Track and Field Meet, held May 12, in Goderich. All the local athletes put forth a first-class effort and several finished among the leaders in their events. In the Junior girls division, Joan Dodds finished sixth in the 100 -metre run and fourth in the triple jump; Tracy Bedard placed fifth in triple jump and Cindy Sorenson came sixth in the 80 -metre hurdles. Dave Vantyghem finished fourth in Junior boys discus and Kevin Cooper placed fourth in the triple jump. Kendra Papple scored a fifth in Senior girls triple jump. John McCowan placed fourth in boys triple jump. Senior is you're doing with the body, the names o the parts of the body, what type of exercises are good on what type of floor, and all about nutrition." All that information has helped Mas. Leitch in her fitness appraisals. So many people she says want to lose weight and to diet, to the point where it becomes a problem in their lives. What a lot don't realize is more often than not they end up starving their bodies and doing them- selves more harm than good. Dieting, she says, may have a smaller effect on weight loss than expected. Instead it tends to lower a person's Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the rate at which the body uses energy when resting. A resting body is actually quite busy - pumping blood, repairing tissue, digesting food, regulating internal temperature, etc. It has been compared to an idling car - not going anywhere but still burning fuel to keep the engine running. BMR is of practical interest from the point of view of weight control. The BMR tells a person the number of kilojoules their body will burn even if it remains completely at rest. doesn't mean you have to log or even attend Any tared kilojoulestebodya as persont, mcoess they win classes.
