Stiffness and fatigue early golf problems
When it's the middle of May with the days
gettinglonger and good weather, it's a
golfer's dream. It is still early in the season
so poor scores can be shrugged off with very
little agony. On the other hand good scores
hold the promise of even better scores when
both the golfer and the golf season peak in
late July.
One of the early season problems many
avid golfers encounter is stiffness and
fatigue. Even golfers who have spent the
winter months hard at other sports will find
that the different type of game requires
different muscle groups. Golf may not look
like a very strenuous sport but there are
some pretty violent swings out therelt
Much of a golfer's ability to get long
,distance on a shot.cdrdffi from strength and,
'lerdbilityooupled with good timing. Timing
is something that is developed through
practise and observance of good technique.
Good golf instruction, well planned practise
sessions, and plenty of regular golf will
enhance tinning. Strength and flexibility can
be enhanced with a proper exercise and
fitness program.
Flexibility is important for golfers to allow
them to make a fullurn and increase the
range of swing. The hips, waist, upper torso
andshouldersshould be kept as flexible as
possible. Any golfer can work on increasing
his flexibility by doing warmup exercises
followed by stretching. Side bends, torso
twists armcirdes and so on will all increase
flexibility on the important areas.
As far as strengthenin goes it is
important to strengthen the Ieeg muscles and
the muscles of the lower arms, wrists and
hands. Strong legs will allow golfers a firm
base from which the swing is conducted. The
legs are also going to be carrying you over
several miles of fairway not to mention
rough, heather, and gorse. The last 3 or 4
holes of an 18 hole game on a hilly course
can be very tiring and more difficult .if you
are out of shape. Walking, biking, jogging,
skipping rope and some weight training can
all be beneficial to your leg strengthening
program.
For the forearms, wrists, and hands,
weights can help as well as squeezing a

that are important to golf. If you build up the
shoulders, and upper arms too much you risk
losing flexibility and it will actually hurt your
golf game.
