WINNING ESSAY — Craig Murray, right, of St. Columban, was the author of an essay which placed among the winners of an airline company contest and earned Craig a trip for two to Vancouver for Expo '86. Is photo at■ Columben youth wine trip While writing a 1,500 word essay on the topic of Transportation and Communications may sound like merely another time-consum- ing homework assignment to most element- ary tuurrned out to be a fool anttastic pport n for CraiMurray, y. it Craig, 18, son of Steve and Ann Murray of St. Columban, found out in March his essay wart among the prize winners in a Pacific Western Airlines contest. His prize includes a trip for two to Expo '86, a three day pass to the event, plus coupons, a T-shirt and a flight bag. It was Mrs. Murray who first drew Craig's attention to the contest brochure, available in schools across the country, last October. Craig also credits St. Columban School Principal George Van Slyk, who pointed him toward some reference material for the essay and even loaned him some books of his own. Roberta Templeman gave a reading, The Old Maid and the Burglar, and five girls, Chrissie Miller, LariJo Gardiner, Sharia Freestone, Julie Martyr and Carrie. Elsdon sang. Lillian Douglas gave a reading and contests were conducted by Betty Dow and Ruth Laing. Carol Anne read an address of good wishes and her many gifts by Cindyillerr and Anne assistednSharon Docking. , nearly 60 guests MAY MEETING Mrs. James Miller, Mitchell, was hostess for the Mav meeting of the W .M.S. Seven members and one visitor, a former member, Marguerite Harper, were present. Mrs. Charles Douglas opened the meeting with a poem. Mrs. Tom Scott led the devotions. Mrs. Mervin Dow chose the topic. Hazel Harburn was in charge of the Mission Study on Nishga and Canadian Justice in land Claims, and the Life and Ministry of Floyd Steinhauer of Saddle Lake, Alberta. Eleven cards and 24 visits to the shut-ins were reported. Mrs. Douglas spoke on the Indian Potlach custom, then thanked all who had taken part. The meeting closed with the Lord's Prayer in unison and a delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Mac Lamond and Mrs. Tom Scott attended the ladies' meeting in the Pente- costal Church in Exeter on Friday, May 2. FAMILY SUNDAY Christian Family Sunday was observed in Cromarty Presbyterian Church Sunday. The junior choir, with Mrs. John Scott at the organ, sang two hymns. The Parable of the Talents was read by Lisa Gardiner and Sherri Elliott as four Sunday School pupils dramatized it. Michelle Martyn took the part. of the Master, with Danny Elliott, Christopher Scott and Steven Pullman as the servants. Larry Gardiner, told an illustrated ThelSuperintendent, story of two fish families, the Sluggards and the Hustlers. She also presented memory work certificates to Carrah Templeman for Part II of the Beginners' Memory Course and Leanne Gardiner for Part 12 of the Junior Course. Two babies were baptized during the service, Pamela Margaret, daughter of Brian and Rhonda Miller, and William Ian, son of Craig and Peggy Kerslake.
