Equipment needs spring cleaning
While many people are spring cleaning the
garage, the house or the yard, golfers
everywhere are spring cleaning their equip-
ment in hopes it will be the beginning of a
great year of golf. It, can be a lot of fun
cleaning out the golf bag and rereading a
crinkled scorecard from the previous season,
especially if it was a good round. There are
often a few surprises when the bag is tipped
upside down and out corn the spare set of car
keys, odd socks, a decrepid looking glove,
and all, manlier of gum wrappings, bottle
caps, pencils and loose change. No wonder
your balk was aching at the end of the
season!
Once the golf bag's pouches and interior
have been emptied, it's time to give it a good
cleaning. Most bags today are made from
vinyl or nylon and are easily cleaned with hot,
soapy water, For those who do have the
luxury of a good leather golf bag, then the
saddle soap treatment is the answer. .After
cleaning, reload the bag organizing the
pouches for convenience. Instead of Just
dumping tees, balls, and markers into the
ball pouch, separate them into clear plastic
bags. This will save time on the tee during
play.
Air out your umbrella and rain gear, fold it
carefully and place in the apparel pouch and
umbrella holder, ready for a surprise shower.
Now's the time to make sure your raingear is
in shape, not in the middle of a downpour.
Golf balls should be sorted and cleaned.
Any old and ill used balls should be discarded
or if in relatively good shape, added to your
practise bag. Golf balls do age and it is wise to
start off the season with plenty of new ones.'
Just a reminder when cleaning balls don't use
bleach as this will turn the paint yellow.
Now for the clubs. iron's should be cleaned
with warm water and detergent and always
dried to prevent rust, The Faces can be lightly
scoured with a fine scouring pad or fine

emery paper. A toothbrush is also handy for
cleaning the faces of irons, Keeping the irons
clean during play is top priority with any good
golfer, Most professional caddies carry two
towels, one dry and one damp, and the clubs
are cleaned and dried after each shot. If the
scoring lines on the irons are kept clean
between shots then it's much easier to get
the proper spin on the ball, When storing
irons for an extended period of time it is wise
to lightly oil them and this will keep the rust
bugs away.
Wood heads should be kept clean and dry
at all times with occasional polishing and
revarnishing. Since hot temperatures cause
the epoxy to loosen,in wood heads it Is best to
avoid extreme temperatures in places where
woods are stored. Always keep headcovers on
the woods to prevent scratches and nicks.
However should the headcovers become wet,
they should be dried before the clubs are
covered add stored.
Most grips today are rubber or composition
although some of the better golfers prefer
leather grips. Rubber or composition grips
can he cleaned with hot soapy water and if
they have become shiny and smooth, a little
sanding will make them easier to hang onto.
Leather grips should be treated with leather
cleaners and conditioners.
Once all your clubs ate cleaned and
polished and the headcovers, umbrella,
raingear, and towels are cleaned and aired,
organizing the bag Is easy. A few extra
pencils, scorecards, a rule book, and an extra
pair of socks are handy additions to carry.

Shoes are a very important part of any
golfer's gear. Leather shoes should be
cleaned with special leather cleaners and
conditioners and perhaps treated with a
water repellent. Manmade shoes are cleaned
with warm, soapy water. Check your laces
and perhaps stash an extra pair In your golf
bag, just In case. Spikes should be replaced
once they are gra to two-thirds worn. Most
steel spikes are good for about 70 rounds of
golf. If you are checking your old shoes or are
getting a new pair, you may want to remove
the spikes and coat the threads with vaseline,
This will prevent rust and possible destruc-
tion of threads.
Pull carts are a popular way to get the clubs
around the course, but there's nothing more
annoying than a squeaky pull cart or one with
wobbly wheels and rickety handles. Now's
the time to check the bearings, oil the parts
and renew the bungey cords or fastening
straps.
Many golfers on the go keep their clubs in
the trunk of the car. This is probably the worst
place you can keep them since temperature
and moisture fluctuations will damage
woods, and the bumping around will cause
scratching, nicks and bent shafts,
IGalf equipment can'vary in price and
q ality to suit any golfer's budget. Whether
ydu have the ultimate or just the basics, it's
important to take care of what you have. This
will benefit your game and increase the resale
or trade in value of your clubs.
Ladies and Men's nights are underway, the
match plays will begin soon as well as the
Crown Life Playdowns.
