Blyth Gallery prepares for sale
The hunt is on for fine quality craftspeople
who would like to take part in a quality (Taft
sale to be held at Blyth Memorial Hall on
June 28. This one -day event, organized by
the visual arts committee to support the
operations of the Blyth Festival Gallery, is
intended to provide a showcase for some of
the many talented artisans working in the
g region. There will be demonstrations of
techniques and a fine array of different
wafts displayed on the lawn and in the
basement of the hall.
The long term goal of the committee is to
develep•the craft show into a major annual
exhibition and sale. This year's show is a
first step, and for that reason it will he a
small one. The space is limited. Craftspeople
will be carefully pre -selected by the
committee on the basis of variety and
excellence in design and skill. Preference
will be given to regional artists.
Like any first step, it is an exciting
gamble. Brigitte Wolf, co-ordinator of the
event, knows how to make a new venture like
this a success. She helped to organize a
farmer's market in New Brunswick that has
become a feature of life there. A craftswo-
man herself, Brigitte is sensitive to the
needs of both the area artists and the,
community.
I can see a place for a well -organized
craft fair in Blyth. The fact that there are no
other major fairs at that time, just when the
summer holidays are beginning, ought to
make it an attractive event for everyone."

The Blyth Festival Gallery extends an
invitation to all craftspeople to apply for a
place in this exciting first show. Applications
are now available. Submissions will be ,
accepted until May 1. Forms will be sent on
request, a self-addressed, stamped envelope
is required. If you are interested in
exhibiting or volunteering to help with the
event, please contact either Brigitte Wolf,

nearly 10,000 names, took a mere two days,
thanks to the Festival's computer which
sorts and prints all the addresses by postal
code. In pre -computer days, it used to take a
couple of weeks to get the brochures sorted
for mailing. If your name is in our computer,
you will be receiving your brochure in the

receiving duplicate copies or if we have an

Bulk distribution of brochures to stores,
hotels, information booths, etc., is mainly
done in person by Philippa Rorgal, Publicity

" I really liked Morris Darling's work when
I saw it for the first time last year in an
exhibition in the Festival Gallery" said
Artistic Director Katherine Kaszas. "I felt
there was a strong connection between what
he does on canvas and what we do on stage -
reflecting life and the quality of life of the
people of this area. As with all good art, its
timelessness makes its appeal universal. rm
thrilled that we are able to use one of his
paintings for our poster this year."

board of directors. Brochures are widely
distributed - from Chatham to Barrie,
Wiarton to Hamilton, Sarnia to Toronto.
If you can't find a brochure in a shop or
library near you, and you aren't planning a
drive through Blyth in the near future, call
519-523-9300 or 523-9225 and ask for a
brochure to be sent to you. This will also
ensure your name is on the mailing list for
next year.

Holly Arntzen in concert at Blyth Sunday
Whether it's a Duke Ellington scat song, a
Hoagy Carmichael ballad, or a haunting folk
song, Holly Amtzen performs them all. Blyth
Festival is presenting the west coast folk,
jazz, blues artist at the Blyth Memorial Hall
on Sunday, March 30 at 2 p.m.
Holly Arntzen's folk influences, spontan-
eous jazz renditions and the visceral
rhythms of her rock and blues numbers, have
been compared to such artists as Gordon
Lightfoot, Cleo Laine and Joni Mitchell.
Holly's music has been featured on CBC
radio shows. "Morningside" and "Simply

appeared on the following CBC television
special. After that performance she was
asked by folk artist Stan Rogers to record the
backup vocals on his last album, "From the

Many of her songs are written by Holly,
and others are a family affair, written with
brother Trevor Jones, father Lloyd Amtzen,
and husband Stephen Foster. The concert
also contains favorites by George Gershwin,
