Easy Riders defend silver
The Easy Riders successfully defended
their silver place showing in provincial
broomball action in Cornwall over the
weekend. The Riders earned the right to
represent the Central Western Ontario
league after winning the intermediate men's
title two weeks ago in Palmerston. This is the
second year the team has made it to the
provincials.
in the, provincials the Riders started out on
a positive note defeating a Canadian
Tire -sponsored team from the Eastern region
2-1. They went on to beat Zoppas Construc-
tion from Cornwall in the second game by a
score of 2-0 before losing their first game, in
the double elimination toumament, to
Goreskis of Port Perry. That game ended 2-1
after an overtime period.
The loss put the Riders against the
Canadian Tire team for a second time, but
they were able to repeat history and defeated
them by a score of 2-0. That win put them in
contention for the gold with Goreskis who had
enne unbeaten for the tournament.
The Easy aiders forced Goreskis into a
second game by defeating them 3-1, but were
unable to hold on in game two, and lost the
championship by a 4-1 score.
"The team played really well. It was tough
competition," said coach John Van Vliet.
"It was pretty scarey because we had to
play the eastern teams and usually nobody
beats them. We beat them three times and I
don't know how we did it. It must have been a
trick. The boys worked really hard. They were
all, carry the boys off the ice at the end of the
shift, games."
In addition to the team's success at the
provincial level, Roger Morrison, a left
winger for the Riders, was named to the All
Star team.
Now, with the provincials behind them the
Riders will try to come from a one game
deficit in a best of three championship series
in local league play. They are battling things
out with the C.H. Express. The second game
is set for tomorrow night.
