Centenaires tops going into series
SEAFORTH JEWELLERS
Main St, Seaforth
527-0270
The Seaforth Centenaires chalked up two
more wins to give them a final record of seven
wins and one loss in the round-robin Junior D
playoffs.
The Centenaires had gone into the week
tied with the Grand Valley Harvestors, but
moved into sole possession of first place with
a win over Clinton last Tuesday, followed by a
win over Grand Valley on Sunday. Grand
Valley had been responsible for delivering
the Centenaires their only loss in the
round-robin series.
The Centenaires will now meet Grand
Valley again in playoff series to decide who
will advance to the Ontario Hockey Associa-
tion playdowns.
SEAFORTH 6, CLINTON 2
Seaforth captured an early lead in the first
period of the Clinton hockey game on a goal
by Jim Campbell just 50 seconds into game
time. Kevin Williamson expanded the
Centenaire lead six minutes later when
Clinton was shorthanded. Jerry W right, John
Dale and Andy Russell drew assists in the
first period.
Clinton took advantage of a Seaforth
penalty about eight minutes into the second
period and narrowed the gap by a goal, but
neither team scored again in the second
stanza.
Two powerplay goals in the third period
and one other clinched the win for Seaforth
since Clinton was only able to retaliate with
one of its own.
Mike Betties scored two of the third period
goals with Jim Campbell accounting for the
other. Assists were drawn by Dave Murray,
Dave Akey, Jerry Wright, Rob Core, Kevin
Williamson and Keith McClure.
SEAFORTH 9, GRAND VALLEY 7
A strong third period offensive gave the
Centenaires a much needed win over Grand
Valley on Sunday.
The Harvesters moved ahead early in the
game, scoring two goals in thefirst period to
Seaforth's one. Dave Murray got the lone
Centenaire goal. He was assisted by Jim
Campbell and Jerry Wright. That goal was
scored on a powerplay,
The Centenaires were unable to dose the
one goal deficit 'after two periods had been
played although they matched Grand Val-
ley's three goals with three of their own. Two
of those were scored again on the powerplay.
Jerry Wright'scored the fust second period
goal and Dave Akey accounted, for the
remaining two second period goals. Assists
were drawn by Jim Campbell, Andy Russell,
with two and Dave Murray, with two.
In the third period Andy Russell led the
scoring barrage scoring a goal three minutes
into the period then tucking the puck into an
empty Grand Valley net with seconds left in
the game. Other third period goals were
scored by Kevin Williamson, Mike Betties
and Dave Murray. Assists were drawn by
Russell, Campbell, John Dale, Kevin Me -
lady, Bill Dale and Williamson.
The Centenaires begin their best -of -seven
semi-final series against Grand Valley
tonight in Seaforth.
