The Brussels Public School held its 25th
Public Speaking contest recently. The judges
were Bev Brown, advertising manager of the
Citizen; Marc Forrest, guidance and English
teacher at F.E. Madill Secondary School and
Warren Robinson, English co-ordinator for
the Huron County Board of Education.
Bev Brown and Marc Forrest congratu-
lated the speakers at the end of the contest
and gave some pointers for future speaking
engagements..
In Grade 4 Tim Machan won with his
speech on "My Love for Hockey.” Other
contestants were Laura Cousins (I Like
Winter) and Erica McDonald (My Trip to the
Alligator Farm).
Grade 5 winner was Amy Albrecht who
spoke on Planets. Other contestants were
Rhonda Heise (Trip to Canada's Wonder-
land) and Kelly Overholt (Vacation at
Grandpa's Cottage).
In Grade 6 Elizabeth Harris won with her
topic being Terry Fox. Others were Krista
Hastings (Pine Lake) and Bobbie Joe
Rutledge (Panda Bears)
Grade 7 winner was Margaret Jarvis with
her speech on Dreams, David Johnston spoke
on Doris My Pet Pig and Garry Yuill Out of
the Province. •
Grade 8 winner was Lori W illie with her
speech "I Love You, Dad". Shirley Ann
Bridge spoke on Teen Suicide and Scott
Johnston spoke on My Dad.
On behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion
Brussels trophies were presented to the
winners. The winners of Brussels Public
School will have a speak off with Grey Central
School to determine who will represent the
Brussels Legion in the Zone contest. Junior
Division, Tim Machan, Amy Albrecht and
Elizabeth Harris; Intermediate Division, Lori
Willie, Scott Johnston and Margaret Jarvis.
Mrs. Cousins, Mrs, Wilson, Mr. Prior and
Mrs. Raymond coached the students.
Scott Bremner and Patti Knight presented
each judge with a gift.
LODGE M EELS
W estem Star Lodge 149 held its regular
February meeting in the Lodge Rooms. The
meeting opened with Noble Grand Ross
Nichol in the chair. BrusselsLodge is sending
a team to the IOOF bonspiel in Exeter in
March. D.D.G. M. Brother Cox from Clinton
attended the meeting along with D,D,G.W . led the discussion group and chatted with the
Brother Fred Delbridge from Exeter. Monk
ton Lodge conferred the setond degree to
three candidates from Brussels and one from
Clinton.
Brother Cox presented a 25 year jewel to
Brother Robert Richmond, Brother Fred
Delbridge presented a 25 year jewel to '
Brother James Edgar. Brother David Mc-
Cutcheon presented a 25 year jewel to his
father Brother Jack McCutcheon and Brother
Cliff Bray presented a 25 year jewel to
Brother Alf Nichol.
NURSING HOME
On Saturday Donald Dunbar entertained at
the piano with some old time favorites for the
residents, Adeline Smith accompanied her
daughter Jean for lunch. Hymns were sung
on Sunday by the Mennonite choirs of Ethel '
and Zion. Joan Miller of Cranbrook had her
mother Margaret McBrien as a Sunday
afternoon guest. Monday was bingo day With
the residents and Tuesday they enjoyed
cards,
Mary Clhu k brought a birthday cake for her
husband Howard's birthday party. Other
guests attending were his sister, Mrs. Bone,
Mr. and Mrs. John McArter and Mr. and
Mrs. 'Gerald McArter.
Dorothy Higgins had a visit from her niece,
Iowan McDonald. Carol and Bill Stevenson
were congratulated on the birth of their
daughter. Carol is a Health Care Aide at the
home. Pearl Stevenson was a proud grand-
mother and also one of the residents. Karen
Cardiff, Jean Evans and Jeannette Boynton
residents on Friday
afternoon..
Rev. Zehr and his congregation from the
Brussels Mennonite Church held their
service Friday evening. Michelle Blake took
Lottie McCutcheon to the United Church
luncheon and then to Listowel with Judy
Hahn to visit her daughter Marg. Everyone
was pleased to have George Hislap return to
the home following his time being hospital-
ized.
INSTITUTE HOSTS EUCHRE
The Majestic Women's institute hosted its
monthly euchre party on March 4. There were
11 tables at play. The following were lucky
winners; high lady, Mary Yuill, high man -
Marguerite Crawford (playing as a man);
travelling lone hand, Jim McTaggart; lucky
Dorothy Townsend; lucky table, Vera
Hastings, Verna Thomas and Jeanne Ireland;
birthday, Ross Cunningham; lucky chair,
Jean Bewley and lucky cup, Harvey Craig.
The next euchre will be April 1,

Peggy Cudmore has returned home
following a visit with her daughter and
son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nay of Gorrie.
Mr. and Mrs. Les Hurst of Dodsland,
Saskatchewan are spending holidays with
Luella, Helen and Jack Mitchell of Brussels
and Emerson and Phyllis Mitchell of Walton.
Jordan and Steven Guy are spending the
mid-term break with Clem and Edna
McLellan.
The 4-H leaders training for Quest for
Success and Seed to Shelf is coming up.

News is scarce this week and we can blame
it on the weather. The storm resulted in
several cancellations. The Women's institute
was scheduled for Thursday night, the Day of
Prayer service on Friday and the Hall Board
euchre. All were cancelled.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Conley attended the
baptismal of their great grandson, Thomas
Robert Baker, in the Ethel Presbyterian
Church on March 2. Rev. Chas. Carpentier
officiated. Relatives attended from London
cancellations
and all were entertained following the service
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Baker.
Mrs. Don Cotton was admitted to Listowel
Memorial Hospital on March 2 and under-
went surgery on March 7. All wish her a
speedy recovery.
Bruce Dadswell of Clayton, Delaware,
spent the weekend with his twin sister, Mrs.
Lloyd Smith.
The Hall Board euchre which was cancelled
March 7 has been re -scheduled for March 27.
On Friday March 14 the Foresters are
having a family dance with music by Tiffin's
Orchestra. Everyone is welcome.
