Wetlands in trouble, study says Wetlands are disappearing. Wetlands provide natural and social benefits, but they are continually reduced or removed through drainage and development. The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Au- thority. in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, will evaluate many of the wetlands in' the A.B.C.A. watershed during the next few months. The study will determine the importance of each wetland on the basis of a province -wide system developed by concerned experts. The A.B.C.A. study is one part of a plan to classify, according to their merits, wetlands in Ontario south of the Precambrian Shield. Heather Manders. the A.B.0 A. staff member who is coordinating the study, explains the study method. "Two evaluators have been hired. They will research aerial photographs and other technical data, and will follow up the research with studies in the field." Ms, Manders says, "Only wetlands over two hectares (five acres) in size will be examined," The two evaluators are: Bob Murray, a resident of Zurich who has a Forestry degree from the University of New Brunswick; and Pat Donnelly, a resident of Londoh who has a post -graduate degree in Geography and Geology from the University of North Dakota. Manders emphasizes that Bob and Pat will obtain permission from the landowners prior to making site visits. Wetlands interest the Conservation Au- thority because they have a Targe role in water management. Wetlands act like giant spon- ges ---soaking up rain and snowmelt, and releasing it slowly. Thus they reduce the effects of flood and drought. The environmental significance of wet- lands is' linked as well, to the wildlife habitat that they provide. Manders explains that this A.B.C.A, study is one step in process being followed by the Ministry of Natural Resources to develop a policy on wetlands protection for Ontario. i BUSINESS DIRECTORY PHONE: 527-0240 PLUMBING HEATING and ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS 1 SILLS 1.Ramo J Seaforth HArdware 527-1620 {la Expert interior & Exterior Decorating Waltcoverings Benjamin Moore Paints Window Shades Hildebrand Paint &Paper Phone 527-1880 1S Main St., Seaforth 'BAILEYS MILL STREET, HENSALL 262-2020 Specialists in Putso Combustion Mooting • tannox Pulse Furnaces • Hydro Pulse Rollers • Lennox Central Alr Conditioning WE'RE PROUD TO BE YOUR LENNOX DEALER BALI. & FALCONER FUNERAL.
