emergency grant
Perth County Cottncil is applying for a
grant from the provincial government to
cover half the cost of preparing an emergency ,
plan for the county.
At its January 9 session, Perth County
Council agreed to apply for $24,500 from the
provincial ministry of the solicitor general.
The other half of the- estimated cost for
Perth 'Count he plan would be picked up by
However, Listowel Reeve Elsie Karges
spoke and voted against going ahead with the
application because she said the municipali-
ties weren't aware that so much money would
be spent on the plan. .
"i question what the money would be spent
on." commented the reeve.
County clerk -treasurer Jim Bell said he had
broken down the $49,000 estimate, which
doesn't include equipment purchase. Ile said
130.000 would cover salary and benefits for a
person to actually carry out the planning
process. 83.000 would cover the printing of
the plan. $1,000 for staff training. $3,000 for
public relations including public meetings,
$5,000 for administration and $7,000 for
travel. mileage and miscellaneous expenses.
Wallace Township Reeve Hans Feldman
said while he sympathized with Reeve
Karges over the cost of the plan, the county is
obliged to provide leadership in case of an
emergency.
If we don't have an emergency we'll call
ourselves lucky, if we do, we'll be glad to
have it (emergency plan)," said Mr.
Feldman.
The idea of the plan, said Mr. Bell, is to
organize what equipment and resources are
available in the event of emergencies. He
suggested that municipalities wait until the •
county plan is prepared before they go ahead
and make their own emergency plan.
Ustowel is at least one municipality in the
county that already has its own emergency
plan.
South Easthope Reeve Amos Gerber
commented that a couple of years ago the
county did approve an emergency plan of
sorts. Mr. Bell said that plan was just a list of
names and telephone numbers,
The South Easthope township reeve also
suggested that the municipalities wait for the
county plan. because it is possible one plan
could be devised that, but for changing of
names, could be used in all communities.
In answer to a, question from Downie
Township Reeve Calvin Innes, Berk -trea-
surer Bell said the plan would probably be
done in co-operation with the City of
Stratford.
W e can't isolate the city." said Mr. 13e11.
The county now awaits funding approval
from the provincial government.
