"Rogeir thought his seed was better than
Sharon's, but Sharon won."
If the pattern continues the Fell children
will . no doubt follow in their father's
footsteps as. World Champion,
But does, Mr. Fell have a secret to his
success?
"I know what his secret is," said Mrs:
Fell,
"I used•to help him pick. out the samples.
He had better luck after I quit.'' ••
"She got discouraged," said Mr. Fell.
"When. I started picking them over
myself, I started to win. It makes a dif
ference if one person does it because the
other always picks out different things."
Mr: Fell did say seeds should have a good
0 or sample tota'rt-with-anti*uniformity,
both .count quite a bit.
"He works very hard at picking out the
seed," said: Mrs. Fell.
"There have been some -long nights."
The key, therefore, is an obvious one:
hard work and a keen eye. How can you
argue with a World Champ?

is thefromfirstpagetime such a program has been of-
fered at the Reheat. The idea for it name out
of a meeting between Mr.-Empringham; Jill
Johnston, who handles special education for
the area; -Dave "One; the Special education ,.
teacher at the school; and Howard James,
the head guidance counsellor. This group of
people discussed how they could give
students opportunities whiclii were not sub-
ject oriented, but were educational and ,
could carry over into a hobby some of the
skills they are learning in school.
They chose Grade 9 because it a small
group. They didn't Want to deal with the
whole school this time. They then
brainstormed until they'came up with 34 ac-
tivities they thought they could bring to
students, and students would be interested
in. Each student decided which three ac-
tivities interested him or her most and
organizers did their best to get them in two
of those activities.
Mr. Empringham admitted the school
receives complaints from some parents
about running programs of this type, and
said teaching in the classroom is the prime
function of the school. But he added
educators also have a responsibility to pro-
" vide kids with options they might not have
otherwise. He said good citizens are not just
well learned, but have full lives.
Mr. Empringham said if such events oc-
curred at the school every week they could
be destructive, but ata rate of two, per year
are only positive.
Students now know a lot more about the
activities that interest them, as well as
some of the people involved in those ac-
tivities, and will feel a lot more comfortable
when actually going to try the sport or hob-
by on their own time.
Now the program will be reviewed and the
school will look at further enrichment for
next semester. This will likely involve
greater numbers and organizers are hoping
to get everyone in the school to participate.
"I think it was a fantastic success, but
we'll wait and let the students evaluatethe
program," said Mr. Empringham.
The school will soon be offering another
extracurricular program when they get
three separate ski days at Talisman.
Students will have to help cover the cost of
the transportation and lessons themselves.
