Pesticides found in farm
area wells water supplies
One or more pesticides were found in half
of 42 wells and 13 of 18 municipal treated
water supplies tested, according to a 1986
pesticide monitoring study released today
by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
All pesticide levels measured were below
Health and Welfare Canada's Interim Max-
imum Acceptable Concentrations (IMAC)
for drinking water.
The sites chosen for the study are located
in"agriculturalareas• where there is heavy
pesticide use and where water resources are
particularly susceptible to pesticide
conta iinatie
Of the.nine pesticides monitored in wells,
four were detected: atrazine, d -ethyl
atrazine, alachlor and metolachior...
Atrazine and d -ethyl atrazine were found
in 50 percent of the wells 'and ranged in con -
concentration from 0.2 to 10:5 parts per
billion (ppb). The IMAC for. each of these
chemicals is 46 ppb.
Metolachlor was found in 3• of '42, wells
tested, at concentrations of 1.2-3.2 ppb. The
IMAC is 60 ppb.
Alachlor was detected in two wells at con-
centrations of 1.4 and 2.3 ppb. The IMAC for
alachlor is 5 ppb.
-Most- of --the wells containing -these--:
pesticides .also contained elevated concen-
trations of other contaminants such as
bacteria, nitrates,' potassium, sodium and
chlorides. The results suggest that
pesticides are entering the wells from the
surface• through 'inadequate well seals or infiltration ltration through porous soils.
The other five pesticides tested for-
simazine,' d -ethyl simazine, cyanazine,
metribuzin and prothetryne - were not
detected in any well sampled.
Testing of treated water at 18 municipal
systems found one or more of four pesticides
detected on one or more occasions in 13 of
the systems.
Atrazine was detected in 13 treated water
supplies at levels ranging from 0.5 to 37 ppb.
Cyanazine was detected in six treated
water supplies atlevels ranging from .13 to
8.8 ppb. The IMAC is 10 ppb.
Metolachlor was detected in five treated
water supplies at levels ranging from .47 to
15.5 ppb.
n. ' Simazine-w,asdetected-once-at-one-treated-
water supply, at a level of .06 ppb. The IM -
AC is 10 ppb.
Alachlor, •prometryne and metribuzin
were riot detected in any of the treated
water samples tested.
Pesticides in surface waters. were most
frequently detected in ..June, July and
August. Treated water at Alvinston,
Dresden, Mitchell's Bay and Tilbury each
tested positive for three pesticides -
atrazine„cyanazine, and metolachlor - dur-
ing the course of the study.
"This study shows the decades -old trend
of increasing use of pesticides is threatening,
our--drinking-water: - Our -'government's ---7
pledge to help farmer's find alternatives to
pesticides and cut their use by half over the
next 15 years is the key to getting these
chemicals out of our water before they
reach harmful levels," Environment
Minister Jim Bradley said.

Grants available for
As many producers are aware, grants are
available from the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food for construction of
manure storage structures and for erosion
control projects. This article will concen-
trate on manure storage. '
All liquid manure storages are eligible for
a grant of 40 percent of the cost of.construc-
tion including excavatlbn and underground
piping, etc. to a maximum of $7,500. These
storages must be sized to ho"'. -nanure for at
least 200 days.
Solid manure storages are also eligible,
p1 ovided the contaminated liquid that runs
off the pad or,cattle yard is collected. This
usually means placing a concrete tank 'at
the lower end of a manure pad or yard. The
tank should be sized to catch at least one
foot of contaminated runoff over the area of
the entire pad and/or yard. This will give
manure storage
you about 200 days Of ,storage. Any liquid
that runs out of the barn must be added, to
obtain the total amount. Either of these
storage systems are eligible for a grant of 40
percent of the cost to a maximum grant of
$7,500.
In addition to this, the Ministry of the En-
vironment has targeted certain watersheds
in the area to receive extra funds. If you live
in the Maitland or Ausable Watershed
Huron County for example, you will receive
40 percent of the costto a maximum grant of
$12;500.
IMPORTANT '= All persons wishing to
obtain a grant must first submit a PRO-
JECT PROPOSAL FORM. This form is
available at your local OMAF office.
