RIDE -in effe.c-t over -Thanksgiving_
'The Ontario Provincial Police "Strict is
Fair" and RIDE enforcement programs
will continue to be in effect during the
Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
. The long weekend has traditionally seen a
high volume of traffic on the province's
highways as families gather for Thanksgiv-
ing festivities or to close down summer cot-
tages for the coming year. -
The holiday weekend is also a time when
many people drive to the country to enjoy
the colors of autumn.
During the 1986 Thanksgiving weekend
OPP officers investigated 269 collisions in•
which six, people died and 446 were injured.
This past Labor Day weekend the OPP in-
vestigated 10 fatal motor vehicle accidents,
compared to six fatal accidents on the same
weekend in 1986.
In the first eight months of 1937 (January
to August) the number of fatal motor vehi-
• cle accidents within OPP jurisdiction rose
by 13.3 per cent over the same period last'
year..
Impaired driving and excessive vehicle
speed are still the two most significant con-
tributors to fatal accidents.
"Lives can be saved only when everyone
drives with caution,", said .OPP ' Commis-
sioner Archie Ferguson.
• "I have instructed -my officers to place
special emphasis on "Strict is Fair" .and
RIDE programs for the upcoming
Thanksgiving weekend."

of teaching. .
Students and staff also welcome Mr. P. ,
