When questioned on the matter Chairman Dave Durand said it was a. personnel recom- mendation the board decided not to make public, and Mr. Murray had been opposed to the recommendation, The 'motion 'was• passed with eight voting in its favor and two opposed. It was never disussed in the general meeting, Mr. Murray later said to another board member "you'll never see anything worse Roman Catholic Separate School Board en Monday, September 28 the Beeard•approved a new Language Arts Curriculum for both Primary and Junior Students. The decision to adopt the new curriculum came after a presentation to the Board by Mike Dewan, chairman of the Language Arts Committee and Principal of Saint An- drew's Scheel 'and Forum. Mr, Dewan says much of the curriculum has been fieldtested already lread and has been critiqued by Ministry of Education person- nel, and they have approved of it. One of the new Implements that will be in -, with the curriculum is a folder that will follow students 'through their school years -as -a -retort! --of their Language_Arts ability, The new• curriculum will also place a dif- ferent emphasis on reading and writing, The new emphasis will be more upon the process of reading.or writing than on the final pro- duct. There will also be more emphasis on computer literacy, and on drama' which hasn't been emphasized in the past. Some of the rationale the Language Arts Committee saw as making the'need for the new curriculum was the need 'to group students according to their ability so they can learn • at the pace which is most beneficial to them. There was also seen to be ••• a need. for teachers to•be able to recognize the individual needs of students and instruct them accordingly, individually. The 'committee also sees a need to have natural 'language that is based on,a child's own experience, because children read and write best about what they`knowr There are also new strategies for children to use to unlock the meaning from words, Phonics is the older method; and it is not be- ing thrown out as something useless, but it will be supplemented by other methods that will be taught to children for them to use to derive -meaning from words. The overall aim is to make children enjoy reading and .writing "so that they will learn faster and willingly. . • The Board also appointed Father Joseph P. Finn to the position of Board Chaplain as of October 1, 1987. • • Father Finn'is currently the pastor of St. Patrick's Parish, Kinkora, and attended the - inaugural meeting of the Board ' in December 1986. He had expressed both an interest and a 'willingness to serve as Chaplain of the Board and was Bishop 'Sherlock's nominee for the' position. If Father Finn accepts his appointment, the term of the appointment will correspond with the term of the School Board -which will last until November 30, 1988. The AIDS education program for separate schools has been completed and should go before the board early in' October. The pro- gram itself will probably start sometime in 1988, and will take place over about six weeks of the school year. '. The progam' has been prepared In con- sultation with the Ontarid Conference of Catholic Bishops, but it must still be.approv- ed by the local bishop before being introduc- ed by the board. The program has been made for grades seven through ten. There was some tension in the board with the bringing up of motions number nine and 10. The motions had been discussed earlier in the privacy of the in camera meeting, but when they were brought before the board to be voted on, board member Ronald Murray said he wanted to hear details of what was being voted on, and inquired if the board was so ashamed of what they were doing MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION Of all the rights Canadians enjoy, few are more precious than the right to freely own, use, transfer or bequeath real property, so long as the rights of others are not infringed upon. All too often, the rights that come with home onwership are taken for granted. Yet they are part of the Canadian heritage, rights that have been hard-won and must be preserved for generations yet to come. Collective efforts to achieve this goal have the potential to enhance the well-being of our community, Real estate practitioners in SEAFORTH, as members of the HURON REAL ESTATE BOARD, and the Canadian Real Estate Association are setting aside a week to remind Canadians of their property rights legacy and to encourage their par- ticipation in the responsible preservation of the basic freedom to own private property. ' Therefore, .I ALFRED ROSS, Mayor of SEAFORTH, do hereby proclaim 5 Oc- tober to 12 October, 1987 to be Private Property Week. I ask all residents of SEAFORTH & AREA to join with the HURON REAL ESTATE BOARD and its members in marking this period to reflect that we are free people endowed with the right to own real property - a right not enjoyed in many other countries - and that we are given the responsibility to protect that right.
