THE HURON EXPOSITOR, SEPTEMBER 9, 1987 -- 7A
en#ma res face rebuilding year
The Centenaires Junior D hockey club will
soon be in action here in Seaforth. The club,
which is being coached by Doug Anstett this
year, is faced with a rebuilding year in the
'upcoming season. ••
The club lost six players from last year's
team as they are now overage,, A lot of the
big guns from last year's team have gone to
other teams as well., The l'eague's highest
scorerlast year, Gerry Wright has gone to
play for a university teach in Nova Scotia, .
The league's second highest scorer - who.
was also -a Centenaire- Mike Betties. has. ,
gone to try outs in Saskatchewan,
o, n nsteft's first goal will 'be to get a
full team on.the ice.. That includes an assis-
tant coach, as the team does not yet have
-one. Mr. Anstett expects he will have a
young team`this year and is hoping to get a`
lot of talented players who will be able to
return to play for the team next year. At the
.. same time, this year is by no means a write-
off and Mr. Anstett still thinks the team
should make the playoffs.
Some players Mr. Anstett thinks will real-
ty'help out the team this year are .Kevin
Melady, Kevin Williamson, and Mike Bet
ties if he returns'. All three are three-year- •
veterans who played on the Centenaires '
team that won tire • provincial championship
'three seasons ago. Some newer players Mr.
Anstett is expecting to'help lighten the load
this season are Mike.Schoonderwoerd and
Steve Schroeder.
Mr, Anstett expects-sometough.competi-

lot of veterans and will'have a few•players_
that were among last year's top.10 scorers •

squad with be the league's best goalie. •
Exeter is another, team, that has veteran
players and a hot goalie:
•
' . There will be sift teams in the north league
this year with' the addition of a new team
from Wellesley. Mr: Anstett said he believes
they too will be a strong team this year, and
said they/probably would not join the league
unless they could put together a competitive
• team.
' The Centenaires team has.been around for
15 years prior to this season .and• has had
three league championships, the last of
which was in the season before last when the
team won the entire O. -LA. Last year the
team was a strong one with soine..of the re=
maining playera from the previous year, but
injuries; hampered the team near the end of
the season and held them back. •
In -recent -years, 'however -the, team has --September 15 and 17 the team will -start

Akey hasgone to the London Knights, and
Pat and Greb Murray have left to play for '
university teams.
'If we had those four we would he un-
touchable,'- said Mr. Anstett. But, he said,
we have'to encouragethese people to move
up the ladderand do the hest they can.
' Part of the reason Mr. Anstett sees-for•the
success of these 'players is because of
Seaforth's minor hockey system, which he
considers to be one of the best around,
In spite of problems keeping the best
players in town, Seaforth is still going to
have a competitive team this year. On

Local club hosts tournament
The Seaforth-Mitchell Karate club held its
first tournament August 28 in Seaforth and
local competitors did quite well. The tourna-
ment attracted 75 competitiors front six dif-
ferent clubs, one club coming all the way
from Owen Sound fbr the•competition.
Club Sensei or coach Rob Malloch said he
felt the tournament went. well but pointed •
out if the event had taken place in the fall or
spring there could have been 300 to 350 com-
petitors: Summer time is slow for karate
clubs and many clubs close, their doors until
things pick up•in fall. •
• The local club did put in a good showing at
the tournament taking home a dozen
trophies. There are two events that com-
petitors can be judged on in karate tour-
naments, one being sparring which is a
mock fight, or as Mr. Malloch puts it 'a fan-
cy game of tag.' It is a way for participants
to fight without hurting one another. The se-
cond event is Kata which is a series of
moves, or a routine, and participants are
judged on•how well they execute the moves.
Local winners were Debbie McGrath -
first place in sparring, Mike Shean - second
in sparring, Rob Glew -first in sparring.
Criag McGrath - third in Kate, Jean Hasson
- first in Kata and third in sparring, Mark
McGrath - first in Kata, Ryan Contois -.se-
cond in Kata and third in sparring. and Jeff
Parker with a third and Andy Parker who
recieved a second and 0 first.
The Tournament is the first of what is
hoped to be an annual event. The purpose of
this tournament was to raise money to buy
tumbling mats. The club still can't afford
the mats, but everyone had a good time.
