Marie 5271430 THE HURON Mites win 'eB' championship A round robin tournament was held on Saturday, August 15 in Beigrave, for .the Mite Boys Southern Deviation "B" 'Championship. There were three teams playing for the "B", Brussels, Belgrave and Winthrop. Belgrave took the first game over Brussels, and then Brussels lost their se cond close game to Winthrop. Winthrop took the "B" Championship win- ning over Belgrave with a score of 11-6. Playing for the .Winthrop Mite Boys are, Allen Henderson,__Mike Vock',M ark McNichol, Steven Leonhardt, Brad and Brent Pryce, Jeremy. McNichol,. Casey Boven, • Britt Etherington, Craig Harris, Geoff Dalton, Mark Van Dooren, Jason Dalton, Davidand Daryl Diegel, and Joshua Dietz with coachs Ron Harris, Darwin Dietz and Sharon Dalton. The Winthrop Boys will now go on to play for the Northern Deviation ''B'' Champs. NOT QUITE ENOUGH -The first annual Winthrop Co; ed Slowpitch tournament was held at the Winthrop ball park for the past few weeks because of rain outs. They finally got -to play Sunday, when a' batter from a team in the ''B" finals swings his bat but doesn't quite reach the. ball as fans of the team anxiously look on. Blake photo: GMs win Winthrop's slow pitch tourney The first °annual Winthrop Co-ed• Slow - pitch -Tournament wound up with an ex- cellent "A". champ game between the, G.M.'s and D.A.M,'s battling through 11 inn- ings for this prestigious title. Despite the sudden downpour, the die-. hard fans stayed for the rain delayed game to cheer on their favourite McClure team. At the end of seven innings, the game was tied 2-2. The eighth, ninth and tenth innings had both teams playing the best mush ball ever seen. The bottom of the eleventh inning saw the G.M.'s send in the winning run to finish•the game 3-2, Glen McClure, of the G.M,'s, ac- cepted the silver coated, three -tiered trophy for his team. The "B" Champs .for this year were the' Brew Crew who defeated. the Chicks and , Dicks in a game that saw many runners . stranded on base. Congratulations to all the teams. Despite the rain delayed tournament, everyone had an excellent time and it was a great success. All proceeds from the tour- nament goes to Minor Ball in Winthrop. Clinton Squirts beat Walton 1.0-7 The Clinton Desch Woodworking Squirt Boys softball team beat Walton 10-7 in the .opening gatne of the- best of five Tri -County playoff series. - Clinton scored two runs in the first inning on a Mark Falconer solo homerun and a RBI • single -by.David Hiltz. Clinton added to their lead in the second on a solo homerun by Jeff Pesch, • In the third John Bernier scored on a RBI single by Mark Falconer who came around • to score on a throwing error.. • In the sixth inning Clinton doubled their score on a two run homer by Mark Falconer, a two RBI single by. Jason Heipel and a RBI single by David Hiltz, • Derek Hoggarth pitched a strong game striking out five -batters and allowing only three hits and three runs into the sixth inn- ing before tiring and being relieved by Scott Wright. Game two of the series proved to be ex- citing with the McNichol team edging out in ..front of Kent' Murray to win by a score of Hole -in -one scored at local Junior golfers will be out in full force on Tuesday, August 25 when the annual'Junior Invitational Golf tournament gets underway at the local course. There are three age groups - Bantams 13 and younger, Juveniles 14-15-16 and Juniors 17 and 18 years old. The tournament also has had a flight for girls but lack of female com- petitors may eliminate that flight. Last year Debbie Lee from Ancaster not only manag- ed to win her own division but had the lowest score over all! . Anyone wishing to come out and watch• is welcome. Golfers will begin about 9 a.m. The ladies night last week was a great success with golfers visiting from Mitchell, Ironwood, and Sunset. On Sunday, September 13, 1987, Canadians across the country will join together to run, walk, jog, bike, wheel or ride the Terry Fox Run. The CALIFORNIA CUTIES will be in town to play the Seaforth Mens Fastball League. The Cuties will provide all the entertainment and laughter you can handle. Trino Palacios as Madam Hilda is recognized world wide as the Clown Prince of Softball and is ably assisted by combina- tion clowns and ball players Fifi the Flirt, Hedda Hooker, Lotta Fanny, and Leapin Lena. This talented group of ball players recorded a 1986 record of 102 wins and only 8 losses, while covering the field, with only four players, Truly,a fancily evening of entertainment, for only $4 for adults and $2 for children. Be there at the Lions Park on August 26 at 7:30 p.m, to catch 'all the fun. The Seaforth and District Minor Ball Association will be having a final Wrap -Up Day, for all teams on Saturday, August 29 at the Lions Park. The T -Ball stars will start the day off at 10:30 a.m., followed by Boys House league at 11:30 a.m. Squirts and Mites will play at 1 p.m. and Bantam girls will play at 2 p.m. against the Bantam and PeeWee Boys. Everyone will be able to en- joy a hotdog, pop and ice cream bar after their game.
