Red, white, blue and brown., Those are the
colors a Seaforth man uses, for his newly -
Nand hobby of .making -macrame ..lawn
chairs. -
George IYliller of 147 Goderich Street W.,
became interested in constructing the cord .
chair last October when he and his wife, •
Joyce,.went to a cheese festival in Wellesley
and saw a macrame chair. The second time
he heard about the unique hebby was from a '
friend in Florida. •
Mr. Miller took action on his desire by
subscribing to . a magazine that focusses
• almost exclusively - on macrame' lawn
chairs. Be tried the string art on his own
haand-found-there-was-rnuch-satisfoP-
tion when the chair was completed. He also
discovered the hobby wasn't, hampered .by
his problem with arthritis. It took a lot of.
time to learn he said, but he was, anxious to
use different colors and patterns, •
• 'Word got out about his colorful hobby and
soon he was making them tcrerder.
. Recently he made a chair with a Blue
Jays pattern. He, took the emblem from a ,
book and figured the pattern out himself by "
figuring out bow any rows and how many
colors it would take before he could draw his
own pattern. —
Depending on thesost of the frame, arm •
covers and balls of macrame cord, the
chairs, range in price from $35 to160: Mr.
Miller said he and his wife often travel to
Lindsay,•New Hamburg or London just to
get the necessary supplies. .
"You just can't go into town and buy the
cord, you know," said Mr. Miller adding on- •
ly•cities carry the colorful thread.
Miller- begins construction- on a
macrame lawn' chair by attaching the cord
. to the front of the bottom frame using a 7.0
crochet hciek. He guides the cord back to the -,
cross bar that holds the chair from folding
inwards and up -to the top of the, frame. At
the top, Mr. Miller attaches the cord with'
another crochet hook and continues this pro-
cesses he "crochets" across.the grain of the
cord. This layer of cord serves as a support
for When the pattern is added and when peo-
ple use the chair.
The next step is to weave.the colors of the.
pattern %through the vertical cords. Mr. .
Miller ends a color and the completed chair
by leaving a one foot "tail" which he weaves -
into the fabric instead of burning or waxing •
Me end.
Before, retirement two years ago, Mr.
Miller sold cars for John Hart, McLaughlin..
Chev Olds and others. Prior to that he owned
several gas stations including -a Texaco sta.-.
tion which he sold in 1970, a Cities Services
station which he sold in 1957 •and a Super
Test station which he bought in 1950. During
-these jobs, he also fixed cars, sold food,
operated a taxi and drove a bus part-time.• •
Mr. Miller was also a bus driver before
owning the gas stations and was among the
first in this area to have a bus prior to the
1950s.
