Canadian :Open:. provides excit.i.n
As I'm writing this, younger brother Ian is
hi the middle of a qualifying round for the
78th Canadian Open which begins Thursday
at the Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville.
Last year Ian gained an exemption into the
Open •and provided some excitement for
area golf fans. Hopefully by press time we
will have more information on Ian's' 1987
status. Whether or not we have a local boy in
the event, golf fans from, this area are pro-
vided with an ideal opportunity_ to see their •
••favorite golf pros in action a mere two hour
drive from here, .
Competition begins Thursday and con -
and ties. The ProAm -is on Wednesday
before competition begins. On Thursday and
. Friday with a full field the players begin tee-
ing off early in the mining and play will
- continue until late afternoon. Onthe
weekend the play begins a bit later. General
admission to the grounds is $10•fot the Pro -
Am on Wednesday as it was on Tuesday for
the. practise. round. During the actual play-
ing days the admission goes up to $22 for the
day. Although camerasare allowed at the
proAm they are"not allowed during the•com-
petition days. To get to Glen Abbey from
• Seaforth just pickup Highway 401 west to
Trafalgar Rd South. Take Trafalgar south
to Highway 5 and then go west to the Third
Line, and south to Upper. Middle Road
.where.you'll see signs for spectator parking:
There is a parking fee and parking is quite
distant from the entrance, however a shuttle
will take you back and forth to the gate. -
It is wise to dress for the weather keeping
in mind that umbrellas do double time as
sun shaders on very hot days. Wear a hat
and good comfortable walking shoes:'
because the course is' long, hilly, and
locating your favorite"golf pro can bean ex-.
hausting task when your feet hurt.

Binoculars are also a handy thing to carry
and maybe an inflatable cushion or folding
chair for fans who, intend to pick a spotfor
the day and let the golfers do the walking..
An autograph book and pen is perfect for
autograph seekers but keep in mind -spec-
tators must stay behind the gallery ropes
and should not interrupt the players during
the -play of -a hole. The best time. to see
autographs is after the play•of a hole when
• the players are heading to the next tee, or at
the practise putting green and hitting areas.
Proper golf etiquette should be observed by
fans and it is always amazing to see thou-
sand of cheering fans hush until you could
hear a • pin drop when the next player is
about to make a shot.
There are refreshment tents on the course
and the proshop is open to the general public
where you can purchase clothing, and equip-
ment. • Thereare also several souvenir
• stands where•hats and teeshirts can be
bought. 'The clubhouse. is off limits to. the
general public and only those •with
clubhouse privileges are allowed inside dur-
ing the open. Golf House's also open. It is
just a five minute walls from the proshop
and is the home of the Canadian Gdlf Hall of
'Fame and the Golf Museum. It is well worth
a visit. At the back of Golf"House and just
behind the Proshop is the caddy area and
contestant's lounge and, locker area. This, is
also an ideal spot for autograph hunters
since the players :arrive arid leave by
courtesy car in this area. •
When you arrive at the course pickup a
pairing .sheet and Mid 'the nearest Water.
board'. If you allow about 15 minutes per
hole you will be able to guestimate quite ac-
curately where your pro is located at any
time.' The pairing sheet tells who is golfing
with who, what' time they teed off and
whether they started on the 1st or 10th tees.
The locator boardsshow where groups are-
on
reon the course and the leader boards, (all
k electronic) tell who slit the -Wad and give
some` background info on the pros playing
that particular hole,
'Golf is unlike any other spectator sport.
You don't just pay your admission,' take a
seat and watch the action unfold before you.
If you are not organized you can spend an
entire day running around the course and .
never see anything exciting. Some people
like to follow a group for the entire 18 holes.
This way they •see the whole course and if
•
•
they are following a hot player they will see
some great. shots too. Other people have a
favorite hole where they like to park for the
entire day and let the players -pass them by.
Usually par 3 holes .are popular because.
there's always a chance that you'll see a =,•
hole in one. The 18th is also a popular place
to. park yourself as it is the finishing hole
and a great place to see the final action...but
get there early to find a spot especially on
Sunday. '
If you require any. additionah:informatin
you can call Golf Reuse or even here at the
Proshop and we'll try to help you out.
Men's night winners last week were: Bill
Robertson, Gary Schenck, Bob Henderson, •
'and Moe Huard:
