Merchants down 1986
Ieqgue champions . 5-4
The Seaforth Merchants, took on and
defeated ,the 1986 senior mens hardball •
league' champions last Tuesday by a score of
5-4. .
Pitcher Clendon Coombs improved . his
record to .6-0 going the distance against Exp
eter. He recorded three strike outs, allowed
eight hits; and gave up five walks andfour
runs, all of them earned, The team itself had
nine hits, struck out seven times and com-
mitted onl one error.
T e game was ie1- a e tEFfirsUmn-•
• ing, but that tie was broken by 'the Mer-
chants in the fourth. With teammates Marty
Bedard . and Del Mitchelmore on base
because of walks Rick Dale hit a double that
sent them home. He scored the third run off
a hit by Jerry Wright.
Exeter tied things up again in the sixth,
but Seaforth took the lead again in the bot-
tom of the eighth when Don Williamson hit a
single that sent Brian Cooper across the
plate.
Cooper and Dale played strong offensive-
ly, both going :two for four for the night.
Williamson went two for five.
"It was a very big win for us,"' said coach
Marc Robinet. .
"We had good pitching, good defense and
timely hitting, which all . contributed to a
very deserving victory: And it gives us the
confidence we need - beating a team of Ex-
eter's calibre."
But confidence wasn't enough Wednesday
night, when a rather small contingent of
players faced Walkerton and lost 5-4.
"We faced the fastest pitcher we've seen
so far this year, and it shewed as he struck
out nine guys over five innings," said
Peewees topple
After a week lay-off Winthrop PeeWee
boys came back full steam to topple
Belmore 15-3, June 18 in Winthrop.
Winthrop led the game with three at the
end of the second inning. Jason McNichol
started the pitching, striking out seven bat-
ters and allowing only one hit. Reliever
Paul Dolmage assisted in the third inning
by getting the third out stopping Belmore at
three runs. Dolmage shut down the opposi-
tion in the top of the fourth, stranding a man
on second and third.
Robinet.
"We only made two'errors, but one was,
very costly as they scored their fifth run on
it.."
Walkerton moved ahead earlyin the
game, scoring one run in each of the first
and third innings, then two in the fourth, to
take a 4-0 lead.
Seaforth narrowed the gap by one in the
fifth inning then regained further ground by
scoring a single in the sixth.
Two runs in t ►h top of the firm. t Inning
moved them closer to a tie, but not close
enough. The Merchants finished the game
with runners abandonned on first and third
base.
Marty Bedard, pitching his first game for
the Merchants, took the loss. He pitched
four innings, struck out two batters, walked
five and gave up four runs, all of them
earned.
Mitchelmore pitched two innings of strong
relief, striking, out two batters, walking two
batters and giving up one unearned run.
"We played five games in seven days and
it was hard on our pitching staff," com-
mented Robinet.
With the first half of the season now
behind them the Merchants sport a 6-5-1
win -loss -tie record.
"That's pretty respectable,"
Robinet.
"The next 12 games will hopefully give us
enough experience for the playoffs."
The Merchants play in Strathroy Sunday
in a doubleheader. On Tuesday, June 30 they
take on the Exeter Juniors in an exhibition
match here in town. Game time is 6:15 p.m.
at the high school.

Experience '87 at MVCA
, Once again the Maitland Valley Conserva-
tion Authority is carrying out its Experience
'87 Program which involves the employ-
ment of 10 students (one co-ordinator and
nine field staff) from within the Authority's
watershed. The program starts on June 22
and will run August 14.
This program, which is provincially fund-
ed, tries to combine a working experience
with a learning one. The main goal of the
program is to allow the students to acquaint
themselves with the actual operation, pro-
grams and projects of M.V.C.A. The. main
emphasis is on conservation and resource
management (such as streambank and ero-
sion control, forest management, wildlife
habitat and interpretive trail development)
but the students will also participate in the
daily operation and maintenance of .the
Authority's Conservation Areas.
The Experience '87 Program Co-
ordinator's position is filled this year by
Alison Hahn who is presently residing in
Brussels, Her duties include clerical and of-
fice duties, hiring the students and organiz-
ing them thereafter. She is considered an in-
termediate between the Experience '87
crew and the rest of the Authority staff. Her '
work term started on May 11 and will run for
15 weeks to finish August 21.

Experience '87 crew. Karen Dam of
Goderich and Diane Raynard of Lucknow
will be working at the gatehouse. Pam
Wilkenson of Goderich and Bruce Russell of
Clinton will be working at the park doing
general maintenance.
Four other Experience '87 crew members
will be working out of the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority headquarters, in
Wroxeter; Trevor Hammer of Listowel,
Chris Michie of Brussels, Jennifer Pyke of
Wroxeter and Heather Shiell of Wingham:
These four students will be periodically join-
ed by the Galbraith Conservation Area Park
Assistant, Sandra Shelley of Gorrie. She will
spend most of her time at Galbraith Conser-
vation Area assisting the park supervisor
with park admissions and general
maintenance, but will carry out the same
duties as the rest of the Experience crew
when in Wroxeter.
In addition to their regular duties, the
crew at MVCA will also participate, in
education days. An orientation day was held
on the first day of work. The students were
allowed to get acquainted with each other,
the Authority staff and the area within the
watershed. With the help of slide shows,
films, safety domonstrations and a tour of
various sites and projects around the water-
shed the students were able to feel more
comfortable and confident with their sur-
rotindings. A second education day will in-
clude the crew taking a Red Cross First Aid
Course which will be held at the Wingham
and District Hospital. The course will pro-
vide the students with' the ability to cope
with emergency situations and to ensure a
safe summer for park patrons and
themselves. A further education day is
scheduled for later on itt the surlier..
