Winthrop dumps Dumpers in Iocal men`s broombaU

W INTH,RWP 2 DUMPERS 1 •
Many felt Wlnthrop's chances against the
Dumpers were about the same as a mosquitos
in a bet cavern. •
No -tine, however, told Winthrop they were
supposed to lose and last Thursday eve they
pulled' off the major upset in the men's
playoffs by virtue of -a 2-1 decision over. a
moribund Dumpers side. The triumph gave
them the series two games, to one 'and they
advance to the .group final against Chisel-
hurst
There is little doubt that, man for man, the
old boys are more skilled, But they had their
collective rears booted by an outfit that was
hungrier ancompensated for inferiors Ils,
by, outworking- their adversaries. The Dump-
ers do have deceptive speed though. They are
slower than they look.
Ross. Mitchell, a chap that had adandy
inthrop short series, got things rolling for W nthrop
when he took along strike from Ed McClure,
raced in alone on goalie Fortune and blasted a
drive to give his group the lead.
Frank Verberne laced a shot that appeared
to be sailing wide of the net but Bob
Henderson neatly tipped the ball and it
changed direction completely. With Win-
throp netminder Paul Machan going one way
there was nothing but ,open space and the
Dumpers had tied the match.
The latter had controlled much of the first
period but Machan. who was flawless in this
rendevous, kept his guys in this thing.
Brad Campbell banged.an the winner after
a wild scramble in front of the Dumper net.
His goal came with. just 5:24 left on the ole
ticker:
MiTCHELL2 H.T. ROYALS 0
The Mustangs continued to impress in.
"C" area play last week. They parlayed a pair
of scores by Jim McCreight into an easy 2 to
nothing conquest of H.T. Royals.
Actually, it was the Royals who had the
best early chance to move ahead. Al Dow
cranked one fromthe point. and Mitchell
goalie Darryl Vorstonbosch had to be sharp`to
prevent the missile from finding its way into
the .net.
After a couple more less than eye opening
opportunities the game virtually belonged to
the 'stangs.'
Mitchell's Murray` Siemon launched one
that H,T.'s.ball stopper Rob Dearing had to
be called upon to make a nifty foot save. His
teammate Mike Jacobs sent a screamer
through a crowd that exploded off the cross
bar.
. It was McCreight that helped put this affair
•
in perspective. t4ewas to be the beneficiary
of Bob Andersons generosity this night.
• Anderson set up the first goal and slid a
pretty pass to McCreight who . slapped" a

marker. Mitchell outshot the Royals 16 to 9 on
the night..
