MVCA budget .approved
Members of the Maitland Valley Conserve-
, tion Authority gave their approval recently to
a 1987 budget of $2,672,019, an 8.3 per cent
increase over last year's $2,468,065.
The approval was given 'following pre-
sentation of the budget at the authority's
annual meeting in Wroxeter.
A breakdowh of proposed expenditures in
the 1987 budget shows the authority's water
and related land management program to
account for 73.4 per cent of the total
spending, or $1,961.473, Administration
costs account for the next largest portion,
$308,000 or 11.5 per cent of the total.
Operations and maintenance costs are
estimated at $224,000 for 1987, representing
8.4 per cent of the total, while the
conservation and recreation land manage-
ment program is expected to cost 5102,746 or
3.9 per cent of . total expenditures. Special
programs, at an estimated 575,800, represent
2.8 percent.. '

On the revenue side of the budget ledger,
$1.998.962' in provincial government grants
are, expected to provide 74:8 per cent of the
authority's income, The balance will be
raised through levies - $230,612, 'general and
$255,100 special - as well as the forwarding of
a $4,063, 1986 surplus, $174,782 in antics;
Plated revenue from operations and $8,500 in
donations. • '
The amount to be raised by general levy
represents an average increase of 6.5 per cent
over the 1986 levy, MVCA general manager
Les Tervit told the members. •
in his budget presentation, Mr. Tervit said
the level of provincial grants for administra-
tion and program administration has in-
creased by just 3.5 per cent over..1986,
representing a "significant" challenge if the
authority expected to maintain its established
programs while continuing to support the
increased costs of their operation.

1987 is the increased local share of the soil
and water conservation program which
resulted from the agreement between the
provindalministries of natural resources and
agriculture and food, in addition to the
change in grant rate from 85 per cent in 1986
to 50 per cent this year.
Water and related land management
capital projects scheduled in the 1987budget

-Listowel Conduit project, completion of
Phase and initiation of Phase 7. $1,295,000...
-W Ingham Special Policy Area, to develop
flood proofing 512,000.
-Ashfield Township fiocd'emsiou map-
ping. to identify flood and erosion prone

-llarriston Special Policy Area report, to
identify floodproofing standards and meth-
ods for floodplain development. 58,000,
-wingharn Howson Dam, design engin-
eering for replacement structure, $42,500:
