"Some people can stayat home if they just
have a little bit of assistance." said Mrs.

'Part of our job, is teaching family
members to help look after the person who is
ill. That person too. needs a lot of support,
from tis. We give them a different view-
point," she said.
PA ILIA TLVECARE
With an aging problem -VON is becoming
very concerned with geriatrics and with the
problem of helping a family cope with the
trauma of the terminal illness of one of its
members. ,
Mrs. -Moore said it is often the palliative
care end of her, work she finds the most
rewarding.

"A lot of family members couldn't do
without the support because" it is usually a
very trying time -for them.'
At the, beginning of each year the VON
dianch estimates its total cost for the
following year and the probable total number
of visits for -the year. DiViding the first by the
second the Branch arrives at its cost per visit.
Previously a patient who, needed VON
services contacted the VON personally. The
nurses made the e4111, performed the service,
and collected the 'cost -per -visit" from the
patient. If the patient could not afford the fee
it,was scaled down according to his ability to
pay or dropped altogether.
Today more than 90 per cent of the VON
cases -are referred by the patient's pkysielani
through one or another government agency,
provincial or municipal. The "cost -per -visit"
is then paid, not by the patient himself, but by
the organisation which referred him or her.

of Health. Each county has a Home Care
Director and staff and it is through this office
that a high percentage of patients is teferred.
But homecare and VON are not the same
thing. -
Small 'lumbers of patients also come
thmugh the local Welfare Services. Work-
men's Compensation and private insurance
plans.
VON nurses are available 24 hours a day
and seven days a week. Eaeh nurse makes
eight or nine visits per day and can visit the
same patient up to four times a day.
In addition to the basic nursing service,
VS#N is involved in providing or administer-
iiig otherservices in Huron County. Pootcare,
paramedical insurance examinations and'
Veteran's Affairs assessments are done.
In Huron County VON also has a
Bereavpment fund which the public is invited
to contribute towards in the event of a friend '
or relative's death. The money is used to
educate VON nurses in palliative care.
If the cost of a VON visit is not met through
a Home.Care program or an insurance plan.
there may be a fee per visit. This can be
adjusted according to ability to pay.
