Taylor, during his receir't visit to Toronto,
passed the first examination of the Law
Society in a . most creditable manner.
Though sick at ' the time he made the
venture, and studying whilst performing
hisschool work'and preparing his recent
work for publication, he • stood fifth
amongst about' thirty. competitors. .liar.
Taylor is now ,a member of the Law So-
ciety of Ontario, but for the present does
not intend pursuing his studies in that
direction further, g :vii g all his time and
attention to his school.
ALMOST SHEEOCArED.--Last• week Mr.
Wm. Cudmore, of the London Road, went
to Toronto with a load of, cattle, register-
ing at the St. James Hotel. On re-
tiring to his room he was accompanied by
the night watchman, who explained to
him •liow the gas was to be turned Wafter

. 'the watchman. thinking that all might
net be right with Mr. udmorc, went up
to the room and attempted to arouse him'
Mr. Oudmoro got up on being called, but
after walking across the room he :reeled
and fell, overcome by inhaling the gas,
which he had only partially turned oil on

was able to return home later in the day,
