It IS iileasing to witness the degree of
enterprise and business principles noW
'Manifested by many farmers to what, there
were a few years ago, and in nothing bi
this shown more forcibly than in the
character and extent of the farm build-
ings, and the provision made for the feed-
ing and comfort of their farm stock, it
now being the most profitable part of the
farm interest. We have before spoke of
the erection of several bank barns in this
neighborhood, and the conyeniences they
possessed, but we have not seen any ,,to
surpass the one au Stapleton, near this
place, belonging to the Messrs: Ransford.
The main building is 68 feet Ignore, 18
feet pests, 45 feet to ridge of roof; With a
three-foot ventilator. Underneath the
whole is a basement 11 feet clear, with A
,root house along one side that has in it
8,.000 bushels of mangolds, the remainder
divided up into stalls for horses and cattle.
On the south of the main building is an-
other barn P5x20, with a sitnilar basement,
and south of this is another barn 55x357,
and similar basement, tile east wall of the
whole being on a line 143 feet. The base-
ment pf the smaller barns is divided into
Compartments • for calves and yearlings,
which herd together like sheep, . The
whole of these frost -proof stables are oc-
cupied by about 100 head of cattle and 12
horses; the sheep, 30 in number, occupy
esframe structure in the south end. To
quantity of ate& the Inest
Complete arrangements are made by a
system of water -works, the power being
supplied by the engine at the derrick. A'
force pump is there stationed, which sends
the water into a tank located in the base-
ment of the main barn, and from which a
set of pipes run. onveying the water to
troughs in the different compartments, so
that scarcely any labor is required to wa-
ter the stock.. In another root house tliey
have about 2,000 bushels Of turnips and, a
1,000 bushels of carrots. There. is some
degree of pleasure,, as well as profit, in
farming after this •fashion, for the cattle
are comfortable and thrive yell. They
have already six sucking calves, four of
them being fine ones.
