THURSDAY, DEC. 15, 1904.
PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS,
JAN. 25T11.
The dissolution of the Legislature was
eintiterized Monday by the Lieuteuant-
Goyernor, and the elections will be held
on. Jan 25. A winter campaign could
have been avoideed only by bringing ou
the bye -elections. These would have
held out little prospect of increasing the
Government's majority, as the seats
vacated, excepting North Reutrew and
Dafierie, were held by Liberals in the
Iasi Legislature. The Premier frankly
told the Liberal convention that he had
no desire to cling to office by a majority
of three. The last session, when pairs
were refused, and the Opposition carried
on a guerrilla warfare, was a test of
endurance which members on both sides
of the Hoose would not care to experi-
enceagain. Whatever the result of the
ensuing election. it is to be hoped the
{majority will be sufficient to insure
stability for at least four years, The
Liberals of Huron are ready for the
elections with cuudidates nominated in
the three ridings. Iu West Huron, the
late member, Mr. M. G. Cameron will
carry the Liberals to victory. In the
1902 election, Mr. Cameron carried the
riding under very difficult conditions in
having a candidate who was pledged ou
the temperance platform of the D.tmiu-
ion Alliance. Mr, Cameron has made a
good member of the House, is a good de-
bator and has a good grasp of all the
leadiug questions of the day. He will
stand by Hon Mr. Ross in carrying out
the provisious of the Temperauce resolh-
tions passed at the big Liberal conven-
tion iu Toronto, If the Liberals of West
Huron stand shoul ter to shoulder in the
support of their candidate, Mr. Cameron
should be returned by a largely increased
majority. Iu East Huron, the Liberals
have a good candidate in Mr. Arch
Hislop, the late member. He had a
large majority at the last election, but
this should not be a means of allowing
the Liberals to do any lagging. Let
every Liberal vote be polled and Mr.
Hislop is a sere winner. In South
Huron, Rev. Mr. McLellon, of Kippen
is the Liberal candidate and he has a
good fighting chance of redeeming the
riding as the Conservative majority in
1902 was only 53. If the Liberals of
Huron do their duty on the 25th of
January, Mr. Ross should have three
supporters from this county.
NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Mr. Milton Carr, who is a cousin of
our townsman, F. J. Carr, has been re-
nominated as a candidate for the Legis-
lature by the Liberals of Parry Sound.
The Conservatives of South Huron
will hold a nominating covention and
mass meeting at Hensall on Tuesday
next. It is likely that Mr. H. Eilber,
the late member will be re -nomin-
ated.
It is now believed that Mrs. Casio
Chadwick, whose forgeries of Andrew
Carnegie's name reach a value of over
$10,000.000, gambled upon the chance of
his death, because in such event:ildr
Carnegie's heirs would .have been un-
able to prove that the notes and trust
deed upon which the whole conspiracy
was based were forgeries.
The Dominion Presbyterian, discuss-
ing the Temperance issue, after quoting
the resolutions dealing with that ques-
tion passed at the recent Liberal conven-
tion in Toronto, says: -"The foregoing
provisions put into the hands of those
who consider the liquor traffic an evil an
extraordinary and effective leverage,
provided it is taken advantage of it; may
not be all everyone would desire; but
we most not be like the partially de-
mented man who declared he would not
budge from where he stood unless and
until he could take the half mile to his
home in one leap. The sane and safe
method, after all, is step by step."
Out of the 202 members -elect of the
House of Commons that have been
gazetted up-to-date, nearly one-third
are lawyers, the gentleman of the legal
fraternity numbering 66. From Ontario
and Quebec there will be an equal num-
ber orlawyers, viz, 29. Of farmers there
are 24 among the popular representatives
e,1,,gazetted, and of merchants 21. Man-
nfacturers and physicians have 15 re-
'preseutatives each. The occupations
of the rest are: -Agents, 4; bankers,
1; brokers, 2; contractors, 2; distillers,
1; druggists, 1; live stock exporters, 1;
frnit growers, 1; journalists, 9; lumber
merchants, 13; millers, 2; miners, 1;
not+sries, 4; ranchmeu, 2; veterinary
surgeons, 1; and nnclassed, 16. •

regardiug an alleged conspiracy that w tr.
entered into by a number of Conserve
tives to defeat the Dominipn Govern
meat at the last election. The names of
three Cabinet ministers have been giveu
and also railway magnate", as being
parties to the scheme, and the statemeet
made that a number of Quebec Liberals
were to retire and allow the Conservative
candidates to be elected by acclamation
and thus stampede the Goverument. As
a part of the alleged plot, Mr. Blaze's
resignation was to take place. Tisk
actually took place. The stateme s
that have appeared in priut are of such
a charuoter that the ministers and others
iw,.licated should not allow them to pass

by a parliamentary committee or a com-
mission,
The answer to the manifesto of the
Dominiou Alliance Executive promised
by Premier Ross is being publisheded by
him in pamphlet form for general dis-
tribution. That manifesto the Premier
describes as not only unfair, bat offen-
sive, and he throws down the gage of
battle. After reveiwiug the history of
temperance progress, and the iutimate
connection of the Liberals party there-
with, he says that if the Executive of
the Alliance had not singled him out for
its animadversions, or the Liberal party
for the purpose of destroying its useful-
ness, he would have treated their mani-
festo as legitimate criticism, but he
thinks the members of that body cannot
now complain if he repels their assaults.
exposes their uufairuess, and calls uoou
the electors of the Province "to sustain
the polies, of the Liberal party against
all hostile combinations, no matter by
whom made or ander what auspices they
are launched upon public attention."

Toronto, Dec. 13 -The run at the city
tattle marker to -nay was 88 cars, with
1.285 heed of cattle, 1,186 sheep and
lambs, 1,800 hogs and 65 calves. While
the run was not a particularly heavy
one it was all right as to quality. There
was some choice Christmas cattle in the
market, and in some cases fancy prices
were paid, and still fancier prices asked
There were several choice heifers, for
which $5 50 up to $6 was asked There
were sales in several places of butcher
heifers at $5. The general run of prices
was higher. as the quality was an im-
provement on recent markets. The sheep
and lanib trade was particularly brisk,
the supply not being equal to the demand.
Lambs were quoted about 40c higher.
