Dialler descriptive and in-

Rev. D. G. Sutherland,
—..„
Steemer Vesta, off Constantinople, ,
May?, 1810.
Wit-etarted on our voyage- thie'afberneo6 at
o'clock, but, something having gone wrong
with the machinery, we Were obliged to come
to anchor in it few minutes. 1 was very glad
on our arrival at Constantinople last Monday,
to find two letters from you awaithsg me.
• I wrote you last from Smyrna; our voyage
up among the islands of the Archipelago,
and through tho Hellespont was delightful.
The scenery of these waters is very fine, and
added to these are the.mythical and historical
associations which- give special charm to all
these parts."' I am specially delighted with
the situation and beauty of Constantinople.
There is perhaps -no more 'charming or advan-
tageous it in the world for a great silty.
Situated at the mouth et the Besphorue, the
highway of an immense commerce, in hearing
which thouserida.of vessels peso by its gates
every year, it has also immense advantatses
to the east and west, commanding both Eu-
rope and Asia. It is built upon hills which
gradually slope from the water, rising one
above tb,e other,, enabling the variotlis courses
and mantes of its houses to be Been. • Some
of -its buildings are of immense eize- -Right
-through the centrooLthe_csity stretches sale
bay, galled the Golden Horn, crowded witsli
vessels, , andspanned- by two or more long
bridges. Our first day .was partly spent in a
trip for about a mile op this bays And inspect-
ing the buildhags along its banks. On an -
ether day we° visited several of the !magniti.
cent. mosques and other public buildings. I
have read sorneWhere that there Aro four hun-
dred naosqees here, and as each of them has
a dome, and two or more lofty, graceful min -
mots; the general effect, as teen from,..a clis
tance, is very striking: Another slay we
spent in making a trip up the Bosphorus to
the Black Sea, which we entered far enough
to riee and fall on its long, heavy swell. The
stream, which ie from one to two miles wide,
in its winding course gives many beautihd
prospects. Its banks aro high, „grassy and
well wooded. For miles it is lined with beau-
tiful houses an's1 costlys magnificent paleCes..
We landed on our way up 'te visit Robert's
College, an American nistitutel where about
200 boys and young men' of various nationali-
tiee.are being. edueated. On our way down
we anchored and landed at Scutari, to visit

full of the very air of poetry and romanee.
To modern viaters, however, the chief attrac-

memories. The lefty columns anderumbliog

steep crag of the Amoeba, with the adjacent
building of the Ereethemin, tell still of the
glory; which onto eticircled that lofty hill.
