OF
THE ()LI NTON' NEW ERA.
At Hamilton, on Saturday :a man
named A. Hunter was fined $100 or 0
months in jail for carrying a revolver,
and pointing it at a. Terson,
J. Lynch, ono r the oldest settlers
in Guelph, and who•occupiedit position
in the sheriff's office for the last thirty
years, died. on .Saturday.
Both the Consolidated and the Ex.
change banks pair<i dividends last year;
and the question is whether theta was
anything but a diminished capital out
of which to. pay them. That the direc-
tors were led tosuppose the banks had
earned a dividend is: possible ; but then
it is -pretty certain that the directors
are often almost as mach in the dark,,
as to the real estate of the institution,
as the general public... When it happens
it is, obvious they do not adequately
realize . their responsibility,—Monetary.

T,bo-Ottanda Free Press Says' that a
young main belonging to its orrice: was
fishing a short ,distance up the eunalif
and•£eeling that he hada bite pulled up
the Hue. A Meek bass had been beak-
ed, and -the 'fish struck the side of the
boat. In order to prevent the fish from
getting •oil the hook, he let it drop into
the water again tor.. a moment, and on
pulling it .out a second time found that
st pike about a foot in leugth'hacl caught
the bass' by the tail. Botlt••fislt . were
landed safely in the boat.
