Va., most likely owes his life to the kindness 'of a neighbor. The Kinloss Agricultural Society was badly disappointed this year, because it was found necessary on Wednesday, to cancel the annual fall fair ,at Lucknow, owing to bad weather. There was a fine inside exhibit, but it rained heavily Wednesday morning and the fair was called off. It cleared up late in the afternoon, and a good crowd was pres- ent, but they only walked the streets. He is supposed to have been 103 years of age but the exact date of his birth is not known. The rainfall registered at the London observatory during the month of Sep- tember was 2 55 inches, as eotupxt'ed with 1,06 during the same month of 1909, The highest temperature record- ed was 83.5 degrees on the 2nd, and the lowest 20 degrees on the 22nd. The highest in September 1903, was 80 de- grees on the 15th, and thelowest in the same month was 20 degteee on the 29th. September had 20 hours less sunshine than the average record. There were only 1U0 bright hours, ne compared with the normal number of 210, It seems probable that the immense peat beds of Ellice townships, contig- uous to Stratford will shortly be worked. Mr. I. Campbell Morrison of Chicago, a former Stratfordite, has invented a con- trivance for converting peat into coal; as there is practically an inexhaustab1 e supply of the former in Ellice, a scheme is under way to have a practical 'lest made. Many thousand dollars have been expended in recent years in apparently futile efforts to make peat marketable. It is estimated that by the new invention peat can be produced at 90 cents a ton. The whole community was greatly shocked on Monday of last week to learn of the sudden death of Miss Matilda Lane daughter of Mr.`James Lane, of the 10th concession of Ashfield. Miss Lane was iu her 26th year and was one of the most estimable and popular young ladies of the township, and her sudden death, of ter a few days illness, was a severe a ill 'lotion to her family and friends, and in their great sorrow they have the earnest sympathy of the whole community. The funeral to Green Hill cemetery on Tuesday was largely attend- ed. On Wednesday, Scptember 28th, Miss Mary J. Rutledge, sister of Mrs. J. H. Millian, of Goderich, was married to Will J. Roes, of Lowell, Mich. The cer- emony was performed by Rev. Mr. Mc- Minn, at 10.$0 a. m., at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rutledge, Pickford, Mich. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Tilly M., and wore a costume of bine, with white silk waist. Mr. Clegg was grooms- man. After the ceremony the newly - married couple left for the Sault and thence for their future home in Lowell. Both bride and groom are natives of this part of Huron county and the bride's father is a brother of Geo. Rutledge of Wawanosh. Commercial Advertisers. I wrote au ad. It was so grand. In the death of Mr. Richard Hughes on Tuesday of haat week, Lucknow has lost an old and highly esteemed citizen. Deceased was for many years a resident of the township of Kinloss before moving to Lucknow, and was well known and greatly respected by a large circle of friends. Mr. Hughes, who had reached the ripe•old age of 84 years and 5 months had been in poor health for some months past. , He was a life-long member of the Methodist church and a strong supporter of the Conservative party. He leaves a widow and a grown up family of three sons and three daughters, James of Tees - water; Benjamin, of Kinloss and Robt. of Brandon; Mrs. Root, of London; Mrs. Fraser, of Walkerton, and Mrs. D. Mc- Intosh, of Holyrood. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon to the Green- hill cemetery, A quiet and pretty weeding took place on Wednesday, Oct. 5th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Pinner in Marmora, when their daughter, Maggie, was unit- ed in marriage to Mr, Fred Hill, of Olin - ton. The ceremony was performed at high noon by Rev. A. L. Brown, pastor of Marmora Methodist Church. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of cream cashmere, trimmed with lace, and carried a shower baguet of white carnations. She was attended by her cousin, Miss Raohel Cristie, Of Madoc, attired in cream lustre and lane. The groom was sup. ported by Mr. G. W. Pinner, brother of the bride.
