Terry Dorssers, the 20 -year-old son of Bank and Joanne Dorssers of RR 4 Seaforth, started travelling the arm -wrestling circuit in Ontario this year and ended up placing se- cond in the nation in his weight class. For this he was given an invitation to the World Championships to be held in California on November 18, Terry says arm -wrestling has been his sport for a long time. "I've just been doing it for as long as I can remember and I've always liked it," says Terry of his sport. As a kid he and his friends would test each other's strength, and once he got a little older he did the same at parties and buck and does. After winning his share of arm -wrestles, he decided to com- pete for the first time last August 4n Mitchell where he placed second. After that he got invplved on the arm - wrestling circuit and started winning in the 136-150 pound, or flyweight, class. He went to about 10 competitions in the past year, winning in Thedford,. Stratford, and small places such as Zurich -Terry says he'd go to any match he heard of. But he also won in cities placing second in London on February 8, winning first place in London on October 1 to qualify for the Canadian championships, and at the national championships in Toron- to he placed second. The only person to beat Terry at the na- tionals was the three time world champion, and six time Canadian champion, and Terry says he was tough and the match was over quickly. "He put me down as if I wasn't even try- ing, like I wasn't even there," says Terry. But Terry knocked over his share of the competition, and earned himself second place nationally and a chance to go to the world championships. But he doesn't think he's ready for the type of competition that'll be in California. Arm -wrestlers are coming from across Canada ; Id the United States, as well other nations like Italy, England and France, for the two day competition. "I'd like to go, but I don't think I'm good enough 'yet to go to the world champion- ships," says Terry. Although he does say that if he did go he would expect to finish in the top 10 in his weight class. One of Terry's problems is sponsorship -he doesn't have it. Most competetive arm - wrestlers are sponsored by a gym or some other business, and Terry is hoping to find a sponsor. Terry plans to be in armwrestling for a few years yet. He says there is more to the sport than spectators realize, and a good competitor is more than just strong. "A lot of people think that it's all strength but it's not." Terry says you have to have speed ( generally matches are over before a minute passes), technique, concentration and strength to win at armwrestling. Terry weighs 149 pounds and comes in just one pound under the flyweight limit of 150. He doesn't work out in a gym,, but at the Hensall District Co-op where he works he loads 100 pound bean bags and that keeps him in shape. Terry had no pretensions when he started in his sport, or when he went to the nationals in Toronto. But he says he's going to stick with it and see how far he can go. "I was just going to see how I would do. I wasn't expecting anything," he explains. "I'd be glad to come out with another second place finish next year." TERRY DORSSERS of RR 4 Seaforth entered the world of professional arm wrestling in the past year. He recently won second at the national finals in Toronto, and was in- vited to the world arm wrestling championships to be held in California. He is seen here with just two of several trophies he has won armwrestling across Ontario, and the medal from the nationals. Corbett photo. Electors responsible for own eligibility Seaforth residents whose names do not ap- pear on the federal enumeration list, can still vote, but must be vouched for at the polls by someone who's name does appear on the list. Although this can be viewed as a "pain -in - the -neck" process, Art Bolton, the area's returning officer says it's impossible for an enumerator to catch everyone at home dur- ing the calling time allotted. In the rural communities (those with a population under 5,000) one enumerator goes out into the community and records in a book, a preliminary list of the electors. He/she then is responsible for revising that list, by making changes and/or additions. Anyone missed can still vote at the polls, but as stated previously, must be vouched for by someone already on the list of enumerated voters. In the urban areas (those with a popula- tion of 5,000 or more), the enumeration system operates a little differently. In those areas, two enumerators, whose names are suggested by the two parties with the highest votes recorded in the last election, go through Their own polling district, filling out what are called 3010 forms and leaving them with the electors. From the second copy of thoses forms these enumerators must then prepare a preliminary list of elec- tors. Urban residents aren't allowed the luxury of being able to be vouched for at the polls. "It's unfortunate that we operate under two sets of rules, but we do," said Mr. Bolton, adding that a great deal of advertis- ing is done by the federal government, to en- sure people make sure their names appear on the voter's list. "Individuals are missed here and there for many varied reasons, and for some Mr. Bolton said it is possible the names of some people will appear an more than one voter's list, but said in that case, it is also the responsibility of the elector to only vote once. "It's against the law to vote twice - and electors can be challenged at the polls," he said. "If it came to a judicial recount, those electors would be subject to legal penalty."
