Spring maker -f—Pagel them working here. We hear a lot about Seaforth down in Plattsville, through hockey and curling, and were impressed that the town was supporting a highschool, a hospital, and a number of very active ser- vice groups. Those are all good resources. And you have a Canadian Tire Store - in such a small community - that said something to us about the town." Mr. Wallbank added however, that he, might be a bit biased towards small towns, sincehe in fact grew up in•one. "My father always worked as, an employer with country people, and I started working with him before I was 18, so I naturally tended to working and living in the country," he said. Mr. Wallbank said his company also ap- preciated the fact Seaforth has a small in- dustrial base, so there would be little com- petition for labor. The Plattsville Plant, for example, is worked by a travelling labor force, and is caught between Toyota and the K -W boom area, and the Japanese and American wage rates. In Seaforth Wallbank Springs expects the wage rates will still be affordable to them, and at the same time at- tractive to the area labor force. The third largest company of its kind in Canada Wallbank Springs manufactures ap- proximately seven to 10 million precision springs per week - less than one per cent of the total market place for springs. At least 90 ner cent of those springs are supplied to SOFT DINNER ROLLS HERBS & SPICES OR PINEAPPLE CREAM CHEESE LB. OLD FASHIONED DATE SQUARES PKG. OF 6 Tasty -Nu White 24 oz. BREAD the automotive industry - for such things as transmissions, fuel pumps, door latch assemblies, hood latch assemblies and seat adjustment mechanisms. In the other 10 per cent Wallbank Springs acts as a first and se- cond tier supplier for such products as the Gabriel Shock Absorber, Munroe shocks, Magna and KSR. The company does not make suspension or coil springs. "This is not a big blacksmith job where people are hammering away on red hot metal all day," said Mr. Wallbanks. "It's a very clean job, where in a lot of cases there are automatic machines operating by themselves." • "The job of a skilled springmaker is a cross between that of a tool and die maker and a car mechanic. It's a smaller trade, but nothing runs without springs," said Mr. Wallbank. Wallbank Springs expects to utilize only 15 per cent of the Genesco building during its first six months of operation. The rest of the building would be available to area mer- chants for storage. As to who will run the Seaforth plant, Mr. Wallbank is as yet uncertain. "They won't be bowtie people from Toron:.. to. We promote from within as much as possible, so it will be a good, hardworking person who has worked their way up. And there will be very few people transferred from Plattsville - we just can't spare them. Most people will be hired from the community."
