IN DAYS GONE BY....
Esther Thompson, resident of Maplewood Manor, remembers back to the Depres-
sion Years of the 1930's when she received her Registered Nursing Certificate with
the first graduating class of Scott Memorial Hospital.
The members of the first graduating class, June 24, 1931 were:
Ann Downey
Ella Roulston
Mona McGregor (Crich)
Esther Trout (Thompson)
Isabelle Duffy (McLaughlin)
The trainees lived on the third floor of the Hospital, working all day on the ward
and then attending lectures or writing exams after supper. The lecturers were Dr.
Burroughs, Dr. Hugh Ross and Dr. Charles McKay. The Superintendent was Margaret
Wilson who often had to persuade the doctors to return to give their lectures after
a hard day.
The nurses were specifically trained to "special" very ill patients or to go out into
the patients county homes. There they would work a 20 hour shift from 5 p.m. to
1 p.m. the following day. The rate of pay was '5.00. It was not until the 1940's that
the long shift was reduced to 12 hours, but the pay remained the same.

homemakers do in Seaforth, Mayor Alf Ross was taken on a tour to three of the 39
customers who use the service offered by Town and Country Homemakers in the
Seaforth area to hear what they think of homemakers, and what services homemakers
provide. Here Mr. Ross and Seaforth Town and Country Homemakers supervisor
Evelyn Pepper visit with Mary Nigh of Seaforth. Corbett photo.

life," says Mrs. Eckert. "They're never
unhappy and they always come in and
spruce you up."
Mrs. Eckert added that she couldn't live
independently as she does in her apartment
if not for the homemakers.
Other stops on the tour were at Charlie
Williamson's and Mary Nigh's, Mr.
Williamson is crippled by a stroke and has
little control of his right hand, but both he
and Mrs. Nigh are able to live in their homes
with the help of their homemakers.
This is the tenth anniversary year for the
Town and Country Homemakers, who now
service all of Huron County and some of
Perth. There are 39 clients of the service in
