John Macdonald, a pioneer of Bruce
county. died at Ches]ey last Friday. He
settled in Elderslie township 49 years
ago and for 19 years was a member of
the township council.

When Wilson Morton, the check book
manufacturer of Chicago and Toronto,
was killed in the G. T. R. wreck at
Wanstead in 190.2, he left two women,
both of whom claim to be his lawful
wiclow. They are both suing the Rail-
way Company for damages. The com-
pany asked the courts to decide which of
the women was entitled to sue. The
company admits liability to no one, but
wishes to know which one. Master -in -
chambers Cartwright decided that the
company will have to determine that for
itself.

An exchange says: Perhaps the teach-
ers in the school may find a spare five
minutes before dismissed to say a few
words to the pupils in behalf of the birds
we now have with us. Birds are killed
and nests are robbed in aspirit of wanton
mischief rather than cruelty. An appeal
to the boys to spare and protect the birds
we feel certain will be listened to.
While the spraying of fruit trees is
very essential it would be well to re-
member that spraying when fruit trees
are in bloom is contrary to law, the pen-
alty for so doing been a heavy fine. The
perfect flower has a stamina and carries
pollen, while the pistillate ones have no
pollen requiring the aid of a staminate
variety to produce fruit. This necessary
pollen is carried•by the"bees, and while
inhaling the fragrance of the blossom
and performing good. Mork they meet
death from the poison contained in the
mixture applied.
It is said that suits will be entered
against the G. T. R. on behalf of the
bereaved ones of the late Harvey Hall,
formerly of Lueknow, unless settlement
is made. There was about $250 iusurance
due Mr. Hall from the railroad company

carried by him is being refused payment
on the ground-pf'neglect of not notify-
ing the company that a change was
made in his occupation.
The corner stone of the new Presby-
terian church at Auburn will be laid
with Masonic ceremonies on Monday,
May 30th, at 3.30 p. in. The Grand
Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada in
Ontario, Judge Harding, has consented
to be present and conduct the ceremony,
assisted by other grand officers of the

Wm. Lowe, of Wingham; J. A. Ander-

township.
Mr. William Colwell has sold his farm
ou the London road to Mr. George Han-
ley, of Clinton, for $6,500. The farm
contains IOC aeras and is a very good
one. It has on it a good new house and
a new bank barn. Mr. Colwell intends
moving his family to Clinton in the
mean time and thinks of going on a
prospecting tower to Manitoba and the
Northwest.
Mrs. Hamilton Bligh O'Connor died at
Teeswater on Monday morning of last
week. She had but recently returned
from Belleville, where she had been for
some time with her daughter, Mrs.
Jones. She was in . her usual good
healtb'and spirits until Sunday after-
noon when she was taken with a faint-
ing spell, from which, however, she
soon recovered and appeared to be quite
well in the evening. Towards morning
she was again taken sick and died sud-
denly shortly after 2 o'clock. She was
in her 80th year. Interment took place
at Walkerton ou Wednesday afternoon.
Relatives from a distance at the funeral
were Mrs. H. P. O'Connor and Fred and
George O'Connor of Walkerton, Mr. and
Iters Purcill of Walkervilie. and Mrs.
Jones of Belleville.
On Thursday, May 12th, Richard
Martin passed away at the residence of
his daughter, Mrs. Jobnstou Huston, lot
25, con. 8, Huron, at the ripe age of 79
years and 7 months. Deceased came to
this country from Ireland about 1849
and has resided about 50 years on his
farm, 3th line of Huron Tp., but spent
some years in Rainy River District and
latterly has been living with his daugh-
ter,'Mrs. Huston. His wife predecased
him abouts years ago, and be is sur-
vived by three daughters; Mrs. Taylor,
Rat Portage; Mrs. Jackman, Port
Arthur, and Mrs. Huston of Huron; also
five sons; John and Richard of Rainy
River, Robert of Fort Francis, Fredrick
of Moose Jaw, and William out West.
He had for the most part enjoyed excell-
ent health and his sudden taking off was
caused by a paralytic stroke.

was born in West Haitepool, north of
England, iu 1835, and came to this coati
try twenty years after to be book keeper
for the first of Moore & Hueter, the for•
mer member being a brother. Whet,

hfrf d with old Mr. Shipley, with whom
he remained for tete years. After tbi-
he became foreman of the Fair farm re-
maining in his post until a couple of yens r
ago, when he retired. having aecumula,

wife, who was a daughter of Anthony
Doddsworth, died about seven years ago.
To then[ were born six children, five of
whom stili live—two sous and two
d tughters at home, and a married daugh-
ter, Mrs. Johnson also of Clinton. The
deceased's death was due to gangrene.
One of the saddest deaths that has oc-
curred in the neighborhood of Auburn
for some thee was that of Friday, May
13th, when Mrs. Erratt was suddenly
called away. She was in the midst of
her usual duties when her daughters left
the room for a few minutes. On their
return they were greatly shocked to !lied
their dent' mother had been called to a
better land. Everything was done to re
animate, but of no avail, the spark of

rind was greatly buoyed by all who

his wife a little over a year ago and this
fact makes the loss so much greater.

those of a year ago we find evidence of a
decrease in population and a tendency

stock in every line. Population has de-
creased by 108. Cattlt increased 2,155,
sheep 457, hogs 1,754, horses 325, and
acres of fall wheat increased by 855.
