The Huron Expositor, 1988-09-28, Page 550th anniversary celebrated at DU banquet
The 50th anniversary of Ducks Unlimited
was celebrated at the second annual Ducks
Unlimited Banquet and Auction Friday at
the Brussels arena.
The auction, sponsored by the Wingham
Committee of Ducks Unlimited, was attend-
ed by a bigger crowd than the first dinner
last year.
"We've got an appreciable increase in the
number of people attending this year," said
(committee chairman Blake Evans. "The in-
creased interest is encouraging. The par-
ticular appeal is that many of these items
(the auction and raffle items) are limited
edition items, available only through Ducks
Unlimited."
The events of the evening included raffles,
a live auction, a silent auction, draws, and.
door prizes. Many of the items purchased or
won were stamped with a medallion or seal
to commemorate DU's 50th anniversary.
Items in the special raffle were a DU 50th
Anniversary Winchester Model 94 30/30 ri-
fle, a DU Canadian 50th anniversary com-
memorative print and medallion by Dumas,
and a Lake Huron fishing charter for four.
Some of the auction items included a
number of limited edition prints; an original
painting: The Loon, by Frank Northgrave;
a 50th anniversary Winchester 12 gauge
shotgun; a New England 20 gauge shotgun
and 30/30 rifle -shotgun combination, and a
labrador pup.
Most of the items were donated by either
Local businesses or individuals.
The . Wingham committee of Ducks
Unlimited made approximately $20,000
from the auction last year, and hoped to do
better in 1988 with the larger response. This
year they had in excess of 200 people, and
tickets to the auction and banquet sold out.
Mr. Evans says he anticipates interest and
attendance at the event will remain steady

THE DUCKS UNLIMITED AUCTION held in Brussels on Friday evening saw over 200

in coming years, and hopes it will be an ef-
fective annual fund raiser.
The money raised at the auction will be
used in maintaining a number of waterfowl
habitat projects the committee has in the
Wingham area.
Time was also taken to recognize the
achievements Ducks Unlimited has made
over the past half century. DU has conserv-
ed nearly four million acres of wetland
habitat, in more than 3,500 projects located
across Canada on both publicly and private-
ly owned land.
DU has almost 400 volunteer fund raising
committees across Canada with more than
75,000 contributors, and DU has contributed
over $300 million to Canadian habitat
development.
On the other hand, destruction of water-
fowl habitat continues at a rate not yet mat-
ched by current conservation efforts.
More than 50 per cent of the original
wetlands in the United States have vanished
and Canadian wetlands are not far behind.
It has been estimated that 3.6 million acres
of additional waterfowl habitat are needed
by the year 2000 just to keep North
American waterfowl populations at current
numbers.
MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD Jack Riddell was on hand for the opening
day of activities of the International Plowing Match, held in Perth County last week.
However, it seemed he needed a few pointers on how to work the tractor from Tim
Nicholson of Monkton.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Darlene Hetherington R.N. wants hospital staff to know what to do if we come
upon a victim who cannot breathe or who is suddenly in cardiac distress. To help
us rehearse, she periodically throws a rubber doll down and grades our skills.
Although it is rather nerve racking, someday a life may depend on us, and we will
be glad of the chance to review our knowledge.
