HURON EXPOSITOR, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1988
SECOND SECTION
AROUND THE COACH - Members of the St. Columban Atom soccer team gathered
around coach Doug Anstett for some final strategy before the team headed into the se-
cond half of the championship. The manoeuver seemed to pay off, because the Atoms,
down 2-1 at the end of the first half, came back to tie the game and force it into over-
time. In the overtime St Columban pulled out all the stops to beat Exeter II. Mcllwraith

St. Columban soccer teams winners
St. Columban soccer teams took home
four out of five "A" playoff championship
trophies the Lucan and District soccer
league had to offer in tournaments played
the past two weekends. The Squirts, Atoms,
Mosq. II and the "under 17" team all won
their perspective divisions.
SQUIRTS
The St. Columban squirts took their two
year undefeated record into the Lucan and
District Soccer League playoff tournament
held in Bryanston September 10 and came
away with the squirt "A" championship
trophy for the second straight year.
The squirts received a "Bye" in the first
round of play and in the second round met
coldstream who had upset second place
Lucan II in the first round of the tourna-
ment.
The St. Columban team played hard
and won this game 3-0.
Goalscorers for St. Columban were J.D.
Nolan with two goals and Larry Kelly with 1.
This win put St. Columban into the final
against Grand Bend.
The game against Grand Bend gave coach
Dan Nolan some anxious moments as his
squirt team was having trouble getting
plays started. Fullbacks Ben Murray and
Chris Verberne, along with goalie Mike
Murray, continued to prove their worth to
this team as they foiled numerous attempts
by the Grand Bend team to upset the league
leaders.
St. Columban's first goal of the game
came off the foot of Ryan Van Dooren, who
picked a dandy time to score his first goal of
the season. That goal seem to pick up the
squirt team and, not to be outdone by his
brother, Scott Van Dooren scored once while
Larry Kelly scored twice. This is the way
the game ended - 9-0 in favor of the St. Col-
umban Squirts. Congratulations to coaches
Dan Nolan and Casey Van Bakel for giving
the Squirt players an enjoyable summer of
soccer.
Squirt team members are: Gary Van
Bakel, Jamie Dick, Ryan Van Dooren, Scott
Van Dooren, J.D. Nolan, Chris Verberne,
Tricia Jansen, Steve Cook, Sandra Van
Loon, Brian Eckert, Ben Murray, Jason
Ryan, Mike Murray, Larry Kelly, Jeff Van
Bakel, Shawn Van Loon, Jared Murray and
Jeff Murray.

day. Here, a Northern player gets caught in a run down between first and second base,

won this play, but they lost the contest by a 2-1 margin. Mcllwraith photo.
ATOMS
The St. Columban Atoms captured the
Lucan and District Soccer League Cham-
pionship trophy for the second straight year
at the playoff tournament held in St. Colum -
ban on Saturday, September 17. The Atoms
played the maximum three games in five
hours, so it was a tired group of players and
coaches that collected the trophy after it
was all over.
In the Atoms first game against Grand
Bend Scott Woods, Greg Van Bakel, and
Shawn Anstett all scored two goals in winn-
ing the game 6.1.
In the second game against first place Ex-
eter I the Atoms fell behind quickly but re-
bounded scoring five unanswered goals and
taking the game 5-1. Chris Marion had two
goals while Shawn Anstett, Mark Van
Dooren and Scott Woods scored singles.
The championship game between St. Col-
umban and Exeter II saw the defence of the
Atoms take over as goalie Pat Coyne made
some outstanding saves in this contest with
fullbacks Greg Visser and Scott Woods
clearing the ball back into Exeter's end and
keeping it there. It was also a busy game for
referee Richard Verberne as there were

Shawn Anstett and Scott Woods both scored
on penalty shots tying the score 2-2 and sen-
ding the game into overtime. Chris Marion
scored In the first five minute half of over-
time to give the Atoms the championship.
Congratulations to the Atoms and to coaches
Doug Anstett and Joe Visser.
MOSQUITO

ticipate in the Lucan and District soccer
league Mosquito championship playoffs.

Three bowlers score 300+
The Seaforth Bowling Association would
like to declare a resounding "Welcome
Back", to all those skittlers who began
their new bowling season this week -
Egmondville, St. James, Mixed Doubles
and the Thursday Nighters. It is hard to
believe that four months have passed since
most last blasted the pins on favorite
alleys.
After such a long hiatus from the lanes
one expects a few gutter balls from those
who are a little rusty, some great hits from
those who are up to their last season's
standards, but three 300 plus games on the
first night hack was not even considered,
George Love bowled an outstanding 769
triple, including a 313 single. Murray Ben-
newies was close behind him with a
devastating 739 triple and 318 single. Reg
Dick gets the honors this week in the men's
singles category with his awesome 319
single that rounded out a 729 triple. That is
one of the best ways I know to get your
season off to a sizzling start.
For the women, Carol Bennewies
registered a 258 single and an unbelievable
653 triple.
In the great moments of the week
category, Pat (Leftie) Ryan bounced back
from a slow start on Monday to record his
first 200 plus game of the season, and two
new bowlers, Debbie Hoekstra and Karen
Piett were impressed as much by the fun
they were having as they were by wat-
ching their steadily increasing scores for
the night.
Because this is the first week of bowling,
and for many leagues only a practice
night, the data is a little sketchy but it is
hoped the situation is remedied shortly. If
you or anyone on your team has a great
moment - such as a personal high single,
triple - 50 or a more points above their
previous best - please circle it and jot a
note down on the score sheet and we will
try to give you the recognition you deserve
(Remembering of course that we do not
have the use of the entire newspaper to do
so).
Next week the remainder of the leagues
should be starting their seasons, and with
three 300 plus game already recorded this
could turn out to be a fantastic season for
everyone. -

Lawnbowting persists despite weather
The Seaforth Lawn Bowling CLub held its
annual fowl tournament Sunday with 16
greens in play. Once again rain cancelled
the third game, however two games were
completed so nearly all two game winners
were prize winners.
In first place were Jack and Marie Muir of
Seaforth with 2w plus 33. Second was Wes
Watson and Ethel Fairbairn of London's
Thistle Club with 2w plus 31 op 10.. Third
went to Bob and Marilyn Hart of Fairmont
Club London 2w plus 31, Fourth was Lee
Ryan of Goderich and Carol McLean of
Seaforth Club with 2w plus 30, and fifth
was Cliff Ashton of Clinton bowling with
Marg MacLaren of Exeter with 2w plus 26.
Sixth went to Jack and Audrey McDonald
of Lucknow with 2w plus 23 and Walter
Newcombe and Della Slavin of Clinton also
with 2w plus 23. This was the final tourna-
ment for this year at the Seaforth Greens
and entries have been very good.
In out of town tournaments, six ladies
were at Exeter ladies trebles and the rink of
Carol Carter, Edna Bell and Thelma
Coombs was a prize winner. Also at Atwood
ladies pairs Mary Finlayson and Edna Bell
were first with 3w plus 41 op ' while Eileen
Adamson and Rika Van Bakel won fourth
prize. In Clinton mixed pairs on Saturday
Sandy Pepper and Eileen Adamson won
fourth prize.
The ladies will be holding their annual
meeting at the club house on September 23.
The monthly potluck supper and social was
Tuesday evening at the club house. All call-
ing list captains are reminded to please call
your lists.

eter. These two teams met once during the
regular season, and that game ended in a 9-4
tie, so the fans were looking forward to a
good game.
The fans got a good game, and more, as
these two teams played the whole game
without either team scoring. The game went
into a 10 minute overtime - two five minute
halfs and in the second half of overtime Ex-
eter scored - winning the game 1-0. This
heartbreaking loss eliminated the St. Col-
umban Mosq. I team from further play.
The St. Columban Mosq. II team won their
first game against Lucan by the score of 9-1.

ANNUAL FOWL TOURNAMENT The
Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club hosted its an-
nual Fowl tournament on Sunday, and
although the rain forced the cancellation of
the third game, it was a successful event.
