Merchants end season with double loss
The Seaforth Merchants Senior Mens
Hardball team ended its season on a disap-
pointing note Sunday. The team lost badly
in both games of a playoff doubleheader
against Exeter.
Things were dismal for the Merchants
from the onset of Sunday's doubleheader,
and resulted in an 11-2 win for Exeter in
game one, and a 10-0 mercy in game two.
Seaforth players struck out 10 times in
game one, made four errors, and scored
two runs off a disappointing six hits. Kevin
Drager was the ace on the mound for
Exeter.
Gary Eisler pitched 6% innings for the
Merchants, but allowed 11 runs on 11 hits.
He walked five batters and struck out two.
In game two Seaforth pitcher Del Mit-
chelmore went 2',5 innings, giving up 10
runs on seven hits, and walking four bat-
ters. Ray Anstett pitched to one batter and
walked him, before Marc Robinet came in
for the final 1% innings. Robinet gave upo
no runs on no hits and struck out two
batters.
But again Seaforth launched no offen-
sive. The Merchants scored zero runs in
game two, and only managed three hits.
They struck out three times, made two er-
rors and left three men on base before the
game ended.
"We just didn't have it Sunday," said
Coach Robinet.
"We hadn't played in two weeks and it
showed. It wasn't a pretty way to end the
season, but you can't take anything away
from Exeter. They're a good ball team
with a lot of depth.
Robinet added Exeter seemed to be
"really pumped up" for Sunday's games,
and attributed it to the fact that they will
be hosting the Ontario Senior D baseball
tournament over the Labor Day weekend.
"It would not surprise anyone on our
team (the Merchants) is Exeter wins it
all," said Robinet.
Some of the games for the Ontario Senior
D baseball tournament will be played in
Seaforth. Games will be played at the Mer-
chant Field diamond (at the high school)
on Saturday at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m.
and 4:30 p.m. The semi finals on Sunday
and the finals on Monday will take place in
Exeter.
WRAP UP
The Merchants finished their regular
season with a record of 11 wins, 11 losses
and one tie. They lost their OBA playoff to
Walkerton in two straight games and their
league playoff in two straight to Exeter. •
"They Merchants would like to thank all
our sponsors and supporters for the 1988
season, and invite them to watch us again
next year," added Robinet.
